for the month of nov y-o-y, rail traffic is just slightly off.  (this is for gwrr-per comp website).

for the month of nov y-o-y rail traffic is barely up for the industry in general.  (source general industry stats).

the major carriers saw a slight gain mostly because of container traffic.  if we exclude that one category, then traffic was flat.

for most carriers it seems like container traffic is the one general bright spot, all else is stagnant.

seems like RR stocks (share prices) have been rising, mostly because traffic is no longer declining like it was before.  but not because of any boom in traffic.  it may be anticipating a slight rise in traffic going forward.

I hate to be saying the same things over and over, but it could be that the rail road stocks are moving higher cause the market place is realizing that oil is about to go up for real and as transportation costs go vertical, rails will be more important in our society.
