I see no constructive use for the like button.  Give us a reason to keep it.  It is used very little and can be "jimmied."

Furthermore, it clutters the forum.  I vote to get rid of it.

See, I just jimmied it with 67 hits.

I would like to hear from those that said they wanted such a thing.

Because the author of any post can "like" his own post as many times as he wants to until his time or patience wears out, the number of likes a post racks up is no way a reliable indicator of how popular a given post is to others (which is the only reason for having a like button to begin with). As designed it's a huge failure.

Both Metmike and I (and probably others) have previously pointed this out.

I'm sure many (maybe most) would like to have a like button. But not the one that's currently offered here.

Why would you like a "like" button?

If there is a good reason for one, then there is a good reason for a "non-like" button as well.

How about a "neutral" button too?

I think a like button is a good idea.

The idea that one person can hit like on the same post to infinity and back is somewhat of a drawback. That would be a fairly simple issue to manage/maintain.

Somewhat more expensive and less essential would be a list of "handles" that have liked a post, presented in a drop down.

Why do you like a "like"  button?

Hint:  I like ice cream because it tastes good.

Hint:  I like GM stock because I made a lot of money with it.

Hint:  I like faster cars and younger women because........?

Hint:  I like a "like" button because................?

Julie:

Have you been overwhelmed with the enthusiastic outpouring of support for the "like" button?   Unless I am mistaken, and unless posters are contacting you privately, I see only one poster liking the "like" button, and with no reasoning other than the poster likes the like button.

Amazing.  Amusing?  Hilarious?  Stirring?

Well the other three might have died so the liking of the "like" button might be in jeopardy.

Stirring, indeed.

I like the idea of a person being able to use the like button once but any additional uses of it for the same topic is charged $100 for each use. Part of the registration process could include a user providing a valid credit card--kinda like when you check in to a hotel and there is a mini bar or video porn. This could get costly for at least two posters here but I would be really happy to provide such an amenity. I'm also thinking there should be a "dislike" and "get a life" button.

Don't worry Tim, under that system there would be a message that would pop up "you are about to incur a $100 charge to your credit card, do you wish to proceed?"
