Carl will find this one interesting:

1905Max Schmeling, German boxer (d. 2005)

Anyone familiar with boxing knows the story of his fights with Joe Louis(from my hometown, Detroit)

Without looking it up, as I recall, Joe Louis lost his first fight with Schmeling, who later won  the heavyweight title by beating The Cinderella Man. Schmeling then lost the title to Max Baer, whom the promotor claimed was Jewish, to hype the fight in NY city's Madison Square Garden. (To  my knowledge, Baer never set the record straight.)

Joe Louis then beat Baer to win the title, and the rematch with Schmeling was on. There was world  wide interest in the fight between the Nazi (he wasn't) and the Black Man.

If you came late to the fight, you missed it. Louis beat Schmeling so badly in the first round that he was hospitalized.

Schmeling went back to Germany in disgrace, since he gave the Aryan Race a black eye.

During WW2 he was a paratrooper.

I apologize if I've got some facts wrong since this was off the top of my head.
