Been thinking about Copeland's song "Simple Gifts"

I guess the disillusionment with politics is getting to me.  I'm reminded of Copeland's song "Simple Gifts" and how life could be a whole lot less stressful.  The best singer for this song, IMHO, is Marylin Horne.  I have a recording of her with the NY Philharmonic that is beautiful, but it cannot be found anywhere.  It is part of a multi-disc set of historic performances.  But there is one performance that, while not nearly as good, is still good.

The lyrics are:

Simple Gifts
Traditional/Shaker

‘Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free
’tis the gift to come down where you ought to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained
To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed
To turn, turn will be our delight
‘Till by turning, turning we come round right.

‘Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free
’tis the gift to come down where you ought to be
And when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

I thought JP, at least, might enjoy the link.

Blowin' in the Wind
Bob Dylan

How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Yes, 'n' how many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Yes, 'n' how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

Beautiful.  Our two kids went to college with those guys, so I remember going to concerts and listening to them.

They've gotten older in twenty years  .  .  .  (g)
