This day is also loaded with interesting events!

2002 – President George W. Bush signs into law the No Child Left Behind Act.

Since natural disasters are up my alley(this one is sort of wimpy):

2009 – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in northern Costa Rica kills 15 people and injures 32.

Wow, you really look carefully at these events(like me) to pick em out carl. Great catch on all the plane crashes.

It was a good day to be a person of color:

1867African American men are granted the right to vote in Washington, D.C.

1912 – The African National Congress is founded.

The South African Native National Congress delegation to England, June 1914. Left to right: Thomas Mapike, Rev Walter Rubusana, Rev John Dube, Saul Msane, and Sol Plaatje

Or to have the word "black" in your name (-:

1904 – The Blackstone Library is dedicated,

Or to be a woman:

1925 – The All-Woman Supreme Court met for the first time in Texas, the first all-female supreme court in the history of the United States.

This last one seems odd since woman had only been given the right to vote several years prior to that:
