"Food scientists at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia are incorporating insects such as maggots and locusts into a range of specialty foods, including sausage, as well as formulating sustainable insect-based feeds for the livestock themselves.

Hoffman says conventional livestock production will soon be unable to meet global demand for meat, so other fillers and alternatives will be needed to supplement the food supply with sufficient protein sources.

“An overpopulated world is going to struggle to find enough protein unless people are willing to open their minds, and stomachs, to a much broader notion of food,” says meat science professor Dr. Louwrens Hoffman. “Would you eat a commercial sausage made from maggots? What about other insect larvae and even whole insects like locusts? The biggest potential for sustainable protein production lies with insects and new plant sources.”

For decades, we've heard of impending food shortages due to population growth, yet farming becomes more and more productive. There may come a time when we fall behind in food production and we'll need "creative" sources for food. Nationalizing our farms could probably do that. Ya know, when a majority comes to the conclusion that the government can do a much better job of managing things than our farmers.

At that point, we'll blame the shortages on curruption and/or greed.

Does population growth lead to hunger and famine?

The bar graphs above show the number of famine victims per decade in the world. The most recent bar on the far right, reflects a number that is almost 40 times smaller than the number from just 50 years ago.

The current climate optimum(the climate crisis is fake) and increase in CO2 has greatly contributed to this.

We might naturally think that the explanation for this trend lies in increasing agricultural production. Indeed, food supply per person has consistently increased in recent decades, the large increase in global population being met with an even greater increase in food supply (largely due to increases in yields per hectare).


Edit June 27th: My brother in law pointed out something about the above graph that doesn't jive with the real world.........and I was already puzzling over............the huge plunge in famine victims recently, giving the false impression that HUNGER and UNDERNOURISHMENT have also plunged in similar fashion.........not so!

While the trend in that metric has been slightly downward, HUNGER and UNDERNOURISHMENT in our world is still a MAJOR crisis that is not close to being resolved, regardless of the big increase in world food supply.

In fact, over the last several years the number of  UNDERNOURISHED people in the world has increased slightly and is just over 800 million people as of 2017. Down from the peak but by no means not still  a serious crisis in much of the world. If you include the number of people that are moderately food insecure, that number approaches 2 billion!

Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Greening Earth, Study Finds

From a quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 25.

An international team of 32 authors from 24 institutions in eight countries led the effort, which involved using satellite data from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instruments to help determine the leaf area index, or amount of leaf cover, over the planet’s vegetated regions. The greening represents an increase in leaves on plants and trees equivalent in area to two times the continental United States.
