Owens specialized in the sprints and the long jump, and was recognized in his lifetime as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history".[3] He set three world records and tied another, all in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan—a feat that has never been equaled and has been called "the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport".[4] He achieved international fame at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany by winning four gold medals: 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4 × 100 meter relay. He was the most successful athlete at the Games and, as a black man, was credited with "single-handedly crushing Hitler's myth of Aryan supremacy", although he "wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either".

You were right there when computers were first introduced carl.

Probably explains your agility to surf the internet as a man just over a year away from being a nonagenarian.

But  this octogenarian missed a great baseball one today(-:

1921Major League Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis confirms the ban of the eight Chicago Black Sox, the day after they were acquitted by a Chicago court.

Here's another big sports event from this date:

1949 – The Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League finalize the merger that would create the National Basketball Association.

Black Sox Scandal

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sox_Scandal

The Black Sox Scandal was a Major League Baseball match fixing incident in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of intentionally losing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for money from a gambling syndicate led by Arnold Rothstein. The fallout from the scandal resulted in the appointment of Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the first Commissioner of Baseball, granting him absolute control over the sport in order to restore its integrity.

Despite acquittals in a public trial in 1921, Judge Landis permanently banned all eight men from professional baseball. The punishment was eventually defined to also include banishment from post-career honors such as consideration for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Despite requests for reinstatement in the decades that followed (particularly in the case of Shoeless Joe Jackson), the ban remains in force.

For those not familiar with the Chicago White(Black) Sox scandal of 1919 and lovers of baseball, you should really read the story from the previous link. It's incredibly fascinating and unique.

Actually, MLB history from a century ago was so totally different than today in many ways.

For one thing, it was still a long ways from having the first black player..............but wait, historians have uncovered information that tells us otherwise, surprise, surprise. Here's a picture from the 1880's below. That's Moses Fleetwood Walker at the far right in the top row.

First black player in major leagues? Hint: It wasn’t Jackie Robinson

        1889 Syracuse Stars

Today, a consensus of the game’s historians believe a former slave named William Edward White was the first.

White was a fill-in for one game in 1879. But until 2004, when researchers discovered more information about him, no one knew he was black.

Breaking the color barrier is a different kind of accomplishment. Walker lasted nearly a full season — and may have played longer if not for an injury — and endured all the taunts, insults and vulgarities that groundbreaking blacks were subjected to during those times.

Say it ain't so, Joe

Say it ain't so, Joe please
Say it ain't so

That's not what I want to hear Joe please tell us it ain't so
Say it ain't so, Joe please
Say it ain't so
I'm sure there telling us lies Joe and I've got a right to know

They told us that our are hero has played his trump card
He doesn't know how to go on
We're clinging to his charm and determined smile
But the good ole days are gone

The army and the empire may be falling apart
The money had gotten scarce
One mans word held the country together
But the truth is getting fierce

Say it ain't so, Joe please
Say it ain't so
That's not what I want to hear Joe and I've got a right to know

Say it ain't so, Joe please
Say it ain't so
They keep on telling us lies Joe please tell us it ain't so

Say it ain't so
Say it ain't so
Cause I've got a right to know
