More profound lyrics

Recently MetMike shared a snippet of lyrics from a Simon and Garfunkel song (if memory serves it was "Sound of Silence").

Today I would like to share more lyrics from a couple of artists, lyrics I find quite profound, meaningful or applicable.

First I would like to present a snippet of lyrics from the song "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock n Roll Band)" by The Moody  Blues.

"How can we understand
Riots by the people for the people
Who are only destroying themselves

And when you see a frightened
Person who is frightened by the
People who are scorching this earth."

It's this last set of 3 lines I find truly poignant given what seems to be happening in the world of global politics and "Climate Change". Governments are frightening the people and it is also the governments that are scorching this earth.

Next I would like to present a snippet of lyrics from a Jethro Tull song called "Thick As A Brick". Now, for those who don't know, "Thick As A Brick" was originally released on vinyl album and the original song was 45 minutes long! There is also an 'abbreviated' version that is a mere 12 minutes long. Both versions contain this stanza.

"And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away
In the tidal destruction the moral melee.
The elastic retreat rings the close of play
as the last wave uncovers the newfangled way."

This set of lines speaks volumes to me. To me, it's an incredibly poetic and imagery rich way of saying "those who don't truly believe the virtues they hold onto will ultimately have those beliefs changed given enough force".

Anyway, hope you all have a good and productive Tuesday!

Very profound stuff madmechanic! Thanks much.

I grew up when those groups were just coming on the scene.

Unlike you, listening to the lyrics and catching the meanings, I heard only the instrumentals........which is why the Moody Blues have always been a favorite.

However, getting older has allowed me to appreciate lyrics like the ones that you just generously shared with us.

I'll listen to a song from the 60's/70's, like "War Pigs" from Black Sabbath that I heard 1,000 times in my life(love those guitars) and suddenly, hear and understand the words.

Black Sabbath Lyrics

"War Pigs"

 Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to Mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds...
Oh Lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'till their judgment day comes, yeah!

Now in darkness, world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of Judgment, God is calling
On their knees the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings...
Oh Lord, yeah!

I may be young, but my dad raised me on "classic" rock. Stuff like Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull.

I have been fortunate enough to actually attend a Jethro Tull concert about 8 years ago and while the group is not as young as they once were they could still play as great as ever.

I have Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and many other classic rock artists on a USB flash drive I keep in my daily driver car and listen to pretty much everyday!

I didn't realize Jethro Tull was still playing then.

One of the most incredible things about music, especially this kind of music is how so many brilliant/genius musicians and song writers came from the same area in England.

Not sure why Jethro Tull is not on that list.

For whatever reason, Jethro Tull manages to fly under the radar despite such great songs as Aqualung, Locomotive Breath, Sweet Dreams, No Lullaby, Thick as a Brick, Teacher and many many more.
