metmike:

The Detroit Free Press did some dishonest reporting in this story.

I agree 1,000% that the Detroit area counties should stay at home, especially Wayne county with 12,544 cases, Oakland county with 5,576 cases and Macomb county 3,792 cases. Those 3 counties had 82% of the total cases(26,988-thru yesterday) in the 85 counties in the state of Michigan. If you add the rest of the Detroit area up to Flint and Kent county in the far west and you have 11 counties that have 98% of the cases and  the other 74 counties that have just 2% of the cases.

The entire Upper Peninsula with 15 counties has a total of 54 cases.  Most of the counties in the  northern half of the lower peninsula, 27 out of 29 counties have less than 10 cases in their county.

I read coverage of this story at other sources and these people are mostly from those counties where there is almost no COVID-19. The Free Press must have known that was the reason for them to be there but intentionally did not mention it. They only mentioned that most of the were Trump supporters........which is also the case in those rural areas with very few COVID-19 infections.

They also made this misleading statement:

"State infection numbers appeared to flatten somewhat going into last weekend, but both infection and death numbers were up again on Tuesday, and an additional  1,058 cases and 153 deaths were reported Wednesday. Health officials have recently expressed cautious optimism but have added that it is too soon to say that the infection has reached its peak in Michigan."

Numbers peaked on April 7th at 1,751 and have been dropping most days but did go up to 1,353 yesterday-just 1 day and will be lower again today because that is what will happen after the peak...........the numbers will not drop every day but they make it sound like numbers are increasing again........they absolutely are not! They are headed down and are in the single digits to 0 in  half the state.

The other thing is that landscapers apparently must follow this. That's nuts.

The reporter that wrote this story was clearly biased and told the story without some key elements that cause me to totally understand where they are coming from.

From the biased story:

"Many of the demonstrators wore hats or waved signs showing support for Republican President Donald Trump."

"The demonstration “wasn’t really about the stay-at-home order at all," Whitmer said later on MSNBC. "It was a political rally,” she said, advocates for open carry of firearms, and people who were protesting against abortion rights."

WOW!

I could care less what party they are from or what their other political positions are........... it just makes no common sense for these people in  half of the state having single digit to ZERO cases in their county to be forced to stay home...........with businesses shutting down and them paying hefty prices for no good reason because of the numbers in 11 counties-98% of the cases and 82% in just  3 counties.

The Free Press was negligent in not stating this was the entire point of the people at this massive protest rally. For the governor to say that the rally was really about open carry and against abortion rights just told me alot about her understanding or caring about these people.

They support Trump.............so they are misrepresented.

These are the numbers for Michigan below as stated above:

This is going to be the most complicated, life affecting decision making endeavor in our countries history.

Those making the decisions will suffer tremendous scrutiny.

In the case of Michigan, the governors response to these people's legit concerns was the exact wrong one. She should have said something provided some explanation for why people in counties with no COVID had to follow the rules too and told them she understands their frustration but the state of Michigan has to act together(even if its dumb for the UP and North to be penalized) Instead, she stated that these people were really there over gun rights and anti abortion views and falsely blamed it on 1 extreme right family/group that she claimed was behind it all.

Not saying this because she's a dem but because she's a horrible, partisan leader.

I've been listening to Dem Governor Andrew Cuomo of NY every day with his briefings . He's a hero. He is smart, objective non partisan, gifted communicator, dedicated, rational and a powerful leader. He would crush Trump if he ran for president.

Sorry for mentioning politics but its to state that the Governor of MI inserting politics into this to vilify  the demonstrators of her poorly communicated policy(instead of recognizing their solid points)  is offensive and for me, at least its not about the political party of the person in charge but the leadership skills of the person.

Most people in the Detroit area wouldn't care about gardening and apparently, the Governor of MI must have the mind of a city dweller.

That is NOT the mindset of all the country folks outside of the Detroit area.........which is most of the state of Michigan.

However, as an avid gardener and living in a more rural location, gardening for some folks becomes a top priority in their lives and no, waiting is not an option for planting the cold season vegs.

This is prime time in Michigan for many to plant, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, potatoes, carrots, onions, radishes, turnips, beets and a few more. In fact, we have passed the optimal time to start but can still do the cold season vegs for a couple more weeks in MI!

May will be too late for many of them though.

Squash, tomatoes, peppers, green beans and corn  need to wait another month. THey are warm season crops.

Is gardening that important right now?

Heck yes. It's an outdoor activity that greatly contributes to the quality of lives to millions in Michigan and is not going to spread the virus and with so many other important things taken away, why not allow for those rational things that will give people something in their lives that they value?

Michigan governor needs to revise her coronavirus lockdown order: state chamber head

DETROIT (Reuters) - Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer needs to revise the recent extension to her stay-at-home order or risk doing serious harm to the state’s economy, including potentially driving hundreds of companies out of business, the head of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce said on Thursday.

Whitmer extended the state’s stay-at-home order last week through the end of April and added some restrictions for businesses in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. She has faced attacks from Republicans in Michigan who say her more restrictive order was unnecessarily straining the state’s economy.

Corporate officials are voicing frustration as well.

“The current stay-at-home order is one of the most vague, one of the most difficult to understand and one of the most overly restrictive orders in the country,” state chamber Chief Executive Rich Studley said in a telephone interview. His organization represents about 5,000 companies with more than 1  million employees in the state.

“We recognize the need for the governor’s first stay-at-home order ... but other states are doing a better job protecting both lives and livelihoods,” he added
