Trump tweets threat that 'looting' will lead to 'shooting.' Twitter put a warning label on it

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/29/tech/trump-twitter-minneapolis/index.html

New York (CNN Business)Twitter says President Donald Trump and the White House's official Twitter (TWTR) account have violated its rule against glorifying violence and has affixed a warning label to tweets on both, marking the first time such action has been taken against the accounts.

The social media platform is using what it calls a "public interest notice" to flag the incendiary post about the protests and violence in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This means the tweets will not be removed, but will be hidden behind a notice that says "this Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public's interest for the Tweet to remain accessible." Users can view it if they click past the notice.

The company's move risked escalating tensions with the White House during an already tense week. Trump signed an executive order that purported to address "censorship" by Twitter and other social media companies, following Twitter's earlier decision to affix fact-check type labels to two of his misleading posts about mail-in voting ballots.

Hours after Twitter flagged the tweet from Trump, the official White House account posted the same message. Twitter then took the same action with that message.

"As is standard with this notice, engagements with the Tweet will be limited," Twitter said in a tweet explaining its earlier decision to place a warning label on Trump's tweet. "People will be able to Retweet with Comment, but will not be able to Like, Reply or Retweet it."

A spokesperson for Twitter said the decision was made by teams within the company and CEO Jack Dorsey was informed of the plan before Trump's tweet was labeled.

Trump continued his criticisms of Twitter on Friday after it labeled his post, tweeting that "it well be regulated."

The president posted an identical message to Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram. CNN has reached out to Facebook for comment.

President Donald Trump's tweet violated rules against "glorifying violence," according to Twitter.

The post in question was about a third night of protests following the death of George Floyd, a black man who was filmed on video saying that he could not breathe as a white police officer used his knee to pin Floyd down

Twitter fact-checks Trump tweet for the first time

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-twitter-trump/twitter-fact-checks-trump-tweet-for-the-first-time-idUSKBN232389

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Twitter on Tuesday for the first time prompted readers to check the facts in tweets sent by U.S. President Donald Trump, warning that his claims about mail-in ballots were false and had been debunked by fact checkers.

The move marked a dramatic shift for the social network, Trump’s primary tool for getting an unfiltered version of his message out to his political base, after years of permissive policies around content on its platform.

The company has been tightening those policies in recent years amid criticism that its hands-off approach had allowed abuse, fake accounts and misinformation to thrive.

Trump lashed out at the company in response, accusing it - in a tweet - of interfering in the 2020 presidential election. “Twitter is completely stifling FREE SPEECH, and I, as President, will not allow it to happen!” he said.

Trump, who has more than 80 million followers on Twitter, claimed in tweets earlier in the day that mail-in ballots would be “substantially fraudulent” and result in a “rigged election.” He also singled out the governor of California over the issue, although the state is not the only one to use mail-in ballots.

Hours later, Twitter posted a blue exclamation mark alert underneath those tweets, prompting readers to “get the facts about mail-in ballots” and directing them to a page with information aggregated by Twitter staffers about the claims.

A headline at the top of the page stated “Trump makes unsubstantiated claim that mail-in ballots will lead to voter fraud,” and was followed by a “what you need to know” section addressing three specific claims made in the tweets.

Trump posted the same text about mail-in ballots on his official Facebook page, where the post picked up 170,000 reactions and was shared 17,000 times. Facebook’s policy is to remove content that misrepresents methods of voting or voter registration, but in this case it left the post untouched.

“We believe that people should be able to have a robust debate about the electoral process, which is why we have crafted our policies to focus on misrepresentations that would interfere with the vote,” a Facebook spokesman told Reuters."

A Twitter spokesman told Reuters Trump’s mail-in ballot tweets were related to election integrity and therefore subject to different treatment under its policies.

Asked about the Scarborough tweets, a Twitter spokeswoman said the company was expanding its products and policies to address such tweets more effectively in the future, without elaborating.

@realDonaldTrump

Looting leads to shooting, and that’s why a man was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Wednesday night - or look at what just happened in Louisville with 7 people shot. I don’t want this to happen, and that’s what the expression put out last night means....

....It was spoken as a fact, not as a statement. It’s very simple, nobody should have any problem with this other than the haters, and those looking to cause trouble on social media. Honor the memory of George Floyd!

REVOKE 230!

The National Guard has arrived on the scene. They are in Minneapolis and fully prepared. George Floyd will not have died in vain. Respect his memory!!!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

metmike: Sounds/reads like a very reasonable explanation to last nights tweet. The problem here is that people at Twitter decided to assign a meaning to what they thought he meant without considering any other meaning. Trump is a poor communicator and often does make volatile tweets(and a case can be made for some of them to go over the acceptability line) but in cases like this, where there is clearly another interpretation which suggests the message was the opposite of what twitter decided, it looks pretty bad for Twitter to flag it. If you hate Trump, what I just stated means I'm a Trump apologist but if this was any other person, I would have the exact same position............would you?

I figured this was coming earlier in the week.

Who thinks it's a good idea and who thinks it's a bad idea to censor/regulate President Trump's tweets and facebook posts.

Why are they suddenly doing it now?

It's a continuation of the same theme.  His executive order is a great answer.

Currently,  social platforms are protected from liability for the content of posts.  They can't be sued for the content of the posts anyone makes.  Seems fair...    Until they start to edit/control posts people make.

So Trump's order lifts that protection.  It likely will not stand..   But it's a warning shot that will get their attention.

We know that "fact checking" is at least somewhat one sided.  (to put it mildly)..  Let's see what happens.

OH OH! This is getting pretty serious. It looks like Twitter is setting the stage to suspend Trumps account so that he can no longer communicate to people between now and the election with his most powerful source...........tweeting.

Twitter removes Trump campaign tribute to George Floyd claiming copyright complaint

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/501270-twitter-removes-trump-campaign-tribute-to-george-floyd-claiming-copyright

"Twitter on Thursday removed a video tribute to George Floyd posted by President Trump’s reelection campaign, claiming it had run afoul of the website’s policy on copyrighted material.

The Team Trump account tweeted out a nearly four-minute long video that is narrated by a speech the president gave a few days after Floyd died in Minneapolis police custody.

In the video, the president can be heard lamenting the “grave tragedy” of Floyd’s death over images of Floyd and peaceful protesters mourning his death."

“This incident is yet another reminder that Twitter is making up the rules as they go along," said Andrew Clark, a spokesman for the Trump campaign. "From the dubious removal of the hilarious Nickelback video to capricious fact checks and manipulated media labels to questionable claims of copyright, Twitter has repeatedly failed to explain why their rules seem to only apply to the Trump campaign but not to others. Censoring out the president’s important message of unity around the George Floyd protests is an unfortunate escalation of this double standard.”

A Twitter spokesperson told The Hill they received a complaint from a copyright owner of at least one of the images in the video, although it’s unclear which one. Harvard University's Lumen Database, a third-party research group Twitter uses to study cease and desist letters, reviewed the complaint and found it to be valid under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

The DMCA is one of the few sections of the law that social media platforms can be held liable for if they do not remove infringing content. The U.S. Copyright Office has said in a report that it recommends a policy for social media platforms that “provides for the termination in appropriate circumstances of subscribers and account holders of the service provider’s system or network who are repeat infringers.”

Twitter’s latest move to sanction the Trump campaign’s content comes amid heightened tensions between the social media giant and the president.

metmike:

1. Why wouldn't twitter identify the part of the video that resulted in the copyright infringement and who complained immediately, so that the Trump campaign could remove that part and resubmit it, if they chose? Or others would know?

2. It's interesting that Twitter, with years of Trump tweets like this passing with no problem is suddenly hyper scrutinizing Trumps tweets with actions....right before the upcoming election.  They are quickly establishing documentation for justification to terminate this account if that's where there intend to go.......which it sure appears like.

3. At the very least, it's obvious, with the election coming up in November and realizing that this is Trumps biggest source for advertising and communicating that they want to put their thumbs on the scale and minimize his ability to tweet what ever he wants to tweet. Since he has not committed a major violation to have his account suspended, in order to do so, they would need several minor infractions.............exactly  like these to do so. Only time will tell on whether that's their intention..........but the stage is set.

I just can't believe that they would suspend his account. That would be mind boggling.

Big Brother has quite a few brothers and sisters that work at the NYT!

I get the NYT updates every morning exactly because they are so liberally biased and widely followed.........I want to read these opinions. They do put out some quality stuff too.

Obviously, the NYT does NOT want their readers to get opinions from the other(conservative side) as evidenced from this:

NY Times editorial page editor resigns amid fury over op-ed

https://apnews.com/90fecc109c4c8bc2fa69021cfa6113cd

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times’ editorial page editor resigned Sunday after the newspaper disowned an opinion piece by U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton that advocated using federal troops to quell unrest, and it was later revealed he hadn’t read the piece prior to publication.

James Bennet resigned and his deputy, James Dao, is being reassigned at the newspaper, the Times said Sunday.

The fallout was swift after the Arkansas Republican’s piece was posted online late Wednesday. It caused a revolt among Times journalists, with some saying it endangered black employees and calling in sick on Thursday in protest.

Following a review, the newspaper said Cotton’s piece should not have been published, at least not without substantial revisions.

Katie Kingsbury, a Pulitzer Prize winner for editorial writing who joined the Times from the Boston Globe in 2017, will oversee the opinion pages through the November elections, the Times said.

Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger said in a statement that he was grateful for changes Bennet had made to the paper’s opinion pages, including broadening the range of voices. Bennet, who was editor of The Atlantic before taking over the Times’ opinion pages in 2016, had received some heat for adding new voices, including conservative columnist Bret Stephens.

The publisher told a reporter from his own newspaper that he and Bennet both “concluded that James would not be able to lead the team through the next leg of change required.”

It was the second high-level journalism job lost because of mistakes made in coverage of the nationwide protests about the treatment of blacks by law enforcement. The top editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Stan Wischnowski, resigned Saturday after uproar over a headline that said, “Buildings Matter, Too.”

Even before Bennet’s resignation and the paper rescinding its support for Cotton’s piece, Sulzberger had called for beefing up the opinion section’s fact-checking and suggesting that it was publishing too many opinion pieces by outsiders.

metmike: Can't let those outsiders infiltrate and interfere with  the political agenda.

New York Times Says Senator’s Op-Ed Did Not Meet Standards

After a staff uproar, The Times says the editing process was “rushed.” Senator Tom Cotton’s “Send In the Troops” essay is now under review.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/04/business/new-york-times-op-ed-cotton.html

"The Op-Ed, by Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, was posted on the Times website on Wednesday afternoon with “Send In the Troops” as its headline. “One thing above all else will restore order to our streets: an overwhelming show of force to disperse, detain and ultimately deter lawbreakers,” the senator wrote.

More than 800 staff members signed a letter protesting its publication, according to a union member involved in the letter. Addressed to high-ranking editors in the opinion and news divisions, as well as New York Times Company executives, the letter argued that Mr. Cotton’s essay contained misinformation, such as his depiction of the role of “antifa” in the protests.

Dozens of Times employees objected to the Op-Ed on social media, despite a company policy that instructs them not to post partisan comments or take sides on issues. Many of them responded on Twitter with the sentence, “Running this puts Black @NYTimes staff in danger.” More than 160 employees planned a virtual walkout for Friday morning, according to two organizers of the protest."

The reaction to this is a reflection of the underlying politics of people that work at this liberal source..........and of course they are very liberal and biased. A conservative would never think about applying for a job there.

The biggest problem here is that this was an editorial from an "outsider" .

You can affiliate with one political side but still allow the other side to express views. That should define all objective news reporting.  Give people/readers ALL the news and ALL viewpoints and let them decide based on the facts from both sides(even when you put your thumb on the scale with biased interpretations).

However, to  completely shutdown the views of somebody that disagrees with you intentionally is another story.

This all goes back to the underlying theme dominating right now.............obliterate President Trump, so that he doesn't get elected again. They hate Trump in a way that is reserved for few historical characters, some not even human..........Adolf Hitler...........Lucifer.

They don't say it, but the main violation of the editorial was that it agreed with and supported a decision made by President Trump.
