Mattis: Trump doesn't even try to unite the US

Hot off the press, this from very well respected former Defense Secretary Mattis is pretty big news and echoes exactly what I’ve repeatedly said about Trump: he tries to divide us and is in that regard way worse than any POTUS in many decades:

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people”

As I have said, Trump doesn’t seem to care for Americans in general but rather for the “red” nation of our two nations. I thought Obama was quite divisive due to (among other things) what I thought was encouragement of class warfare as well as lack of support for the police as a respected institution and not putting enough effort to try to quell riots. I never voted for him and still very much feel the same way about him. However, I think Trump is much worse!

So that I won't be accused of being a Trump apologist, here is the view of CNN on this, in addition with a thread from over a year ago, communicating my long held dislike for Mattis's military policies  and similar leadership in the past (I was NEVER McCain in 2008).

Leaders like him have cost us thousands of brave US soldiers lives and trillions of dollars.

Despite that, I agree with his current point but do NOT consider him somebody that puts the safety of the US people(soldiers) ahead of his personal political agenda........similar to many of our military leaders that, historically pick conflict over peace, control/intervention/military intervention in foreign countries over being passive and letting them decide their own destiny.

His track record shows where he stood in the Middle East. This is the main reason that he parted ways with President Trump(and is part of the reason for me to support Trump in spite of his despicable behavior at times).............Rand Paul, about the only politician that I trust for honesty was a major Mattis critic for exactly these reasons.

Murkowski, Mattis criticism ratchets up pressure on GOP over Trump

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/501253-murkowski-mattis-criticism-ratchets-up-pressure-on-gop-over-trump

Criticism of President Trump from former Defense Secretary James Mattis and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is ratcheting up pressure on other Republicans to push back on the president’s handling of nationwide civil unrest.

Mattis, who is as close as anyone to being universally respected on Capitol Hill, called out Trump on Wednesday for what he called the president’s lack of a “mature leadership” and accused him for intentionally trying to divide the nation.

Murkowski said she thought Mattis’s words were “true and honest and necessary and overdue” and suggested that it might embolden other Republicans who privately disagree with the president’s often controversial tone and conduct to speak out.

“When I saw Gen. Mattis’s comments yesterday I felt like perhaps we’re getting to the point where we can be more honest with the concerns we might hold internally and have the courage of our convictions to speak up,” she said.

Murkowski also admitted to “struggling” to decide whether to support Trump’s reelection even though she pledged to “continue to work with him” and "continue to work with this administration.”

The statement, made to reporters shortly before a noontime vote, exploded like a bombshell in the Senate and immediately became the top story of the day.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), a frequent critic of the president who voted for his impeachment, wouldn’t go so far as to comment on Mattis’s statement when asked about it by reporters and instead praised the former general as “a person of extraordinary integrity and sacrifice” and “a patriot who has sound judgment and capacity.”

After Murkowski’s endorsement of Mattis’s critique became headline news, Romney told reporters that his “letter was stunning and powerful.”

I think one of Trumps biggest mistakes, that made him look especially bad (to me) was using the bible as a prop.

The king of inflaming race relations, Al Sharpton had me in strong agreement with him on that point today.

Rev. Al Sharpton: Trump used a bible as a prop. We will not allow George Floyd to become one.

i am Not concerned about whether i am united with the far left bernie supporters.  as far as i am concerned, all those socialists can learn the tough lesson of supporting themselves instead of depending on handouts from taxpayers.

i don't see it as the presidents job to unite everyone.  for me,  the leaders job is to just leave everyone alone, so we can work our job, support our family, and live with as little govt intrusion as possible.

yes, i would like the city to patch the pothole down the street.

Hilarious pj!!

Thanks for the good laugh!

BTW, I was not personally offended by him doing this. He was not intentionally disrespecting the bible(he was thinking the complete opposite and intentions mean everything)........ I'm not  somebody that thinks he committed a sacriligeous abuse of a cherished Christian symbol........but I could have told you before this happened from knowing Christianity and its people (which his act shows is probably not him) that this IS a very revered and sacred  symbol for millions that would be offended to see it treated like a prop.

If Jimmy Carter did this, it would have been well received as sincere and probably have been his own personal bible and he might have opened it and read a passage.

With Donald Trump, even though he was just portraying an image of somebody that stands for religious rights, law and order...which exactly describes his agenda... he is FOR the Christian agenda, he is NOT a practicing Christian. He is the complete opposite of a Christian in his behavior and words. I don't hold this against him to the point of it offsetting his good for American agenda as president but this particular staged presentation of him using the bible as a prop was so destined to backfire that only somebody that does NOT understand how some people view the bible could have contrived it.

I'll give you a nice analogy to explain how this does not change my view of him.

He has the position about the fake climate crisis exactly right. Withdrawing from the fraudulent Climate Accord, which would do nothing to affect climate as its just a transfer of wealth from the developed/rich countries to the undeveloped/poor countries( I'm certain that he completely understands that)........was one of the best , gutsy but authentic things ever done by a president.

But there have been a few times when he made statements like "climate change is a hoax created by China"(he knows now thats not the case but said that 4 years ago) or when we have a major cold wave, will make a joke that relates it to the fake climate crisis.

I am not voting for an atmospheric scientist for a president or  somebody that can sound convincing and knowledgeable about weather and climate(Obama sounded convincing on this but told us complete rubbish/junk science). I care only about his agenda being authentic even if his word's, sometimes are full of doo doo.

So it boils down to this. You should agree with some of it.  He is somebody that has mostly good to great positions/agenda but has a big mouth and tries to be the authority on everything(as the narcissist control freak) vs letting his authorities do all the talking and him limiting his words, statements and actions  only to what he knows for sure(now a days, his reputation for misstating/exaggerating has resulted in the MSM constantly taking anything that he says, even legit stuff and twisting it to meaning something bogus).

He could say that the sun rose in the east today and they would excoriate him because the sun only really rises exactly in the east on the equinox's.......in the Spring/Autumn. During the rest of the year, there is a deviation to the north or south that maxes out on the Winter/Summer solstice.

BTW,  speaking as one of the ignorant gun/bible clutching deplorables,   I kind of resent people placing all the blame for the division in this country at Trump's feet. Particularly when it appears that at least half of his "divisive" quotes are manufactured.
