Ahead of National Guard arrival in Philly, tensions flared for a second night after police killed Walter Wallace Jr.

  • Philadelphia police fatally shot Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old Black man armed with a knife on the 6100 block of Locust Street on Monday afternoon. Family members and neighbors questioned the shooting, while city officials said an investigation was underway.
  • Wallace’s death has prompted two days of protests in West Philadelphia. Hundreds of people protested, with interactions between police and demonstrators turning heated. On Tuesday night, Philadelphia officials urged residents in some neighborhoods to remain indoors.
  • Police said as of Tuesday afternoon at least 91 people had been arrested in relation to the unrest. More looting — separate from the protests — was reported Tuesday night, particularly in Port Richmond.
  • The Pennsylvania National Guard says it has been mobilized in response to the events following the shooting.
