Is it still necessary to wear masks outdoors? CDC 'looking at' revising mask guidance

Some health experts are increasingly calling for mask restrictions to be eased for outdoor activities.

Masks protect against coronavirus infection, but with more than 84 million adults in the United States fully vaccinated against Covid-19, there are growing questions about whether wearing masks outdoors is still needed.

On Thursday, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told "TODAY" the agency is considering revising its mask guidance.

“We’ll be looking at the outdoor masking question, but also in the context of the fact that we still have people who are dying of Covid-19,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky said.

Already in states where mask orders are still in effect, there are moves to loosen restrictions for outdoors. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper hopes to lift restrictions, including an outdoor mask mandate, by June 1. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is considering a change to outdoor mask guidance by June. Connecticut will lift mask requirements for outside in mid-May, along with transitioning indoor mask rules from mandate to guidance.

Some health experts are increasingly calling for mask restrictions to be eased for outdoor activities.

“We know that the virus largely spreads indoors and there's very little transmission outdoors, except in some very specific circumstances,” Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, said. “At this point in the pandemic, with more than half of Americans vaccinated, it's pretty reasonable to start thinking about peeling back outdoor mask mandates.”

Masks should be used during large outdoor gatherings where people are close together for a prolonged period of time, such as a rally or sports events in packed arenas, he said. But passing someone on a street or going for a run without a mask is a very low-risk situation.

“Requiring everybody walking down the street to wear one is probably not needed,” Jha said.

A review paper published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that less than 10 percent of transmission occurs outdoors and the odds of spreading the virus indoors were 19 times higher."

metmike: If you went outside without your almost worthless cloth mask last week, it was dangerous, even if you'd been vaccinated.  We know this because our science experts told us so (-:

Since they are revising that now, you can go out without your mask  now if you were vaccinated and it is now safe because the scientists told us that its now safe.   Could have killed you last week..........safe this week(-:

Do I need a mask outdoors? CDC says certain activities are safe for fully vaccinated people

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/do-i-need-mask-outdoors-cdc-says-certain-activities-are-n1265452

"Over the past year, we have spent a lot of time telling Americans what they cannot do, what they should not do," the CDC's director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, said at a briefing Tuesday. "Today, I'm going to tell you some of the things you can do if you are fully vaccinated."

People who are fully vaccinated should also feel comfortable without face coverings outside with other small groups when it's unclear whether others have had their shots.'

metmike: In other breaking news................The National Weather Service is telling people that when the skies are completely clear outside, they don't need to wear a raincoat.............but if there are any clouds in the sky, they should have an umbrella with them because clouds cause rain (-:

Based on the CDC guidance, after I was fully vaccinated, over 3 months ago, it was not safe to go outside without my almost worthless cloth mask.

But today, under the exact same conditions, they told me that it's now safe to do exactly what I knew was safe in January, when they were applying bs science.

Biden sets goal of at least one shot to 70 percent of adults by July 4

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/551741-biden-to-set-goal-of-at-least-one-shot-to-70-percent-of-adults-by-july-4

"Biden also pointed to new CDC guidance saying vaccinated people do not need to wear masks outside."

metmike: They continue to say dumb things................of course vaccinated people do not need to wear masks outside..........we did not need to wear masks outside 4 months ago either or a month ago, when the CDC told us to still wear masks outside.

Vaccinated  people do not need to wear masks inside either...............though the CDC is still telling us that we need to.

And worst of all, they are STILL telling vaccinated and unvaccinated people to wear the CLOTH masks and not the masks that actually work, the N-95 masks.

                Enough with the mask

Something is really wrong with these government scientists/officials. Why are they saying all these dumb things?

Here's another one from the same article

"A senior administration official said that with 70 percent vaccinated, there would be a “sharp decline” in cases, though the official noted that this is a different threshold than “herd immunity.”

There is not an exact known percentage of inoculations for what would constitute herd immunity, but the White House has deemphasized that as a goal, noting that cases will decline as more people are vaccinated."

metmike: Don't these people look at the actual data/numbers? Or are they saying these wrong things to make us think that it's much worse than it really is right now? We've dropped 85% since the early January peak! Why are they saying that we need to get to 70% vaccinated to have a sharp decline in cases? An 85% drop in cases isn't a sharp drop to them????

Lowest numbers since September....and falling again. Down 85% from the peak in early January.  They will never get to even 1/3 of that rate again.  OVER half the country has either had COVID or been vaccinated. Many places are at 85%+ of herd immunity.

Find this data here: https://coronavirus.1point3acres.com/en

It's like they are just making stuff up when it comes to COVID rules and facts.....and they wonder why people are rejecting the bs?  How about them just telling us the truth and maybe we'll start thinking of them as credible...............well, ok, I guess it's way to late for that now.

metmike: In other breaking news...that extra bowl of ice cream that you've been eating every night since early January...... is what caused you to gain 20 lbs this year (-:

Not shaving for 4 months is what caused all that hair on your face (-:

Not showering for 4 months is why your body stinks (-:

Not watering your house plants for 4 months is what caused them to die (-:

But just to repeat the breaking COVID news, so that everybody knows. COVID cases peaking in early January and dropping 85% since then...............means that we are just now turning the corner (-:

Fauci finally says vaccinated Americans don’t need masks outside

https://nypost.com/2021/05/13/fauci-says-vaccinated-americans-dont-need-masks-outside/?utm_medium=browser_notifications&utm_source=pushly&utm_campaign=1003893

"Dr. Anthony Fauci finally encouraged vaccinated Americans to ditch their masks outside — more than two weeks after the Centers for Disease Control gave the green light that it was safe.

“If you are vaccinated, you don’t have to wear a mask outside. We’ve got to make that transition,” the White House chief medical advisor told CBS This Morningon Thursday.
