Do the crime but never do the time.

The idea of good conquering evil is a staple of Western fiction, from novels and plays to movies and TV shows. In the vast majority of cases, you know the hero of the story is going to win in the end, because that's how it's meant to be. It's a nice thought, but in reality, that’s not the case at all: criminals nearly always get away with it – and nowhere is that more evident than with cybercrime. Although the authorities have succeeded in capturing hackers in the past, the vast majority of cybercriminals never face any consequences for their actions. What makes it so difficult to catch them?

I actually started this thread when doing some research for another thread/post

It has been painfully obvious,  others realize this too.... that the US is extremely vulnerable to cyber attacks which could shut down key parts of our society.

I doubt that today's meeting will have any impact on cyber attacks. I think that earlier, Biden threatening that the US would respond with counter cyber attacks is silly and potentially counter productive. What sort of form would those take? They would just result in an escalating cyber war, with each side trying to hurt the other side more than they are being hurt and pretending that the other side is causing it and its not them thats responsible.

The only way to make this better is to have systemic, effective protection from cyber attacks. That is the only way. People that do this sort of thing have no conscience and are really smart and almost none of them, especially from other countries will ever be caught and the potential attack they create can be extremely powerful from their end(by itself, feeding their ego/motives)

If you know what you are doing,  it's very easy to cover your tracks on a computer.

There will always be a trace,  some byte(s) somewhere that will leave a clue,   but with a little effort,  you can make it nearly impossible to find.  And the internet is a very large place. Practically a virtual universe.
