Major structural issues there that did not result from salt air corrosion, believe me.

Ive seen SO many structural compromises  due to age deterioration and what is today considered substandard structurally built structures. These structures slowly reveal their faults then maybe a major collapse. Im referring to buildings on a much smaller scale with very little structural steel and concrete. Buildings are designed with X times the needed strength to safely perform.

 What a tragedy!

John

Edit: A sink hole would trump all that for sure

well MM there seems to be a new theory on the building. Do not have a link but our local radio show had audio clips of a Biden appointee actually.....and I am not making this up as stupid as it sounds......blaming global warming for the collapse. That person was from Michigan and was either former Gov or some such. If you can find the statement it will provide you with a weekends entertainment.

Thanks mcfarm,

There are plenty of sources and stories pointing towards climate change and the rising sea levels as some actually use that to blame the sinking land on climate change and the cause of the building being destabilized.

They are scientifically illiterate on this subject.

It's called land subsidence and has ZERO to do with climate change......but for sure, the sinking land could have everything to do with the collapse of this building.

Climate scientists say building collapse is a 'wake-up call' about the potential impact of rising seas

metmike: This is made up. There is near 0% connection.

Even this story below has to acknowledge it.(granted, in the distant future, rising seas might cause some potential problems but they had ZERO to do with the collapse of this building...........ZERO).

Subsidence(falling land is mostly responsible) Sea levels are rising at just over 1 inch/decade but the falling land in this spot is many times greater than that. Rising seas do make the main problem worse............but please stop ignoring the natural part that explains most of these things and trying to hang your hat on it mostly being from climate change(which is much, MUCH more beneficial to life on this greening planet than it is in realms like this)

Florida’s Oceanfront Cities Are Not Prepared for Sea Level Rise

South Florida is sinking and threatened by sea level rise. It's never been more clear its buildings are in danger.

https://gizmodo.com/florida-s-oceanfront-cities-are-not-prepared-for-sea-le-1847176462

"Long before the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside crashed, the building started sinking. An April 2020 study found that the area showed signs of land subsidence—sinking brought on by natural occurrences like sinkholes and exacerbated by human activities like extracting fossil fuels and groundwater. The study’s authors told USA Today that back in the 1990s, the building was descending at a rate of 0.08 inches (2 millimeters) per year, though it’s not clear that that necessarily contributed to its horrific collapse."

FIU professor: Collapsed Surfside building showed signs of subsidence in ‘90s

Land subsidence unlikely to cause building collapse on its own, researcher says

https://news.fiu.edu/2021/fiu-professor-collapsed-surfside-building-showed-signs-of-subsidence-in-90s-era-space-radar-data

The top most yellow dot represents an area of subsidence FIU Institute of Environment Professor Shimon Wdowinski detected in Surfside, Fla. using 1990s era space-based radar data.

In the 1990s, Miami Beach experienced subsidence at the rate of 1-3 millimeters per year, which could add up to a few inches of movement over a decade, Wdowinski said. It was significantly slower compared to other parts of the planet Wdowinski has studied. Mexico City, for example, is subsiding at a rate of 15 inches per year.
