My link failed but a USA Fact Check claims that the PCR doesnt identify variants just covid viral genetic material.

Further analysis is required to determine which flavor Covid you may have when a positive result occurs.

Apparently the same swab sample is used but sent upstairs to the smart guys for the variant work. 

They keep us in the dark-maybe for expediency purposes.

Guess that makes sense.
