I started this thread as part of a presentation to my grades 7-12 chess players at our season ending chess practice/pizza party to help educate them on the much higher risk of dying from drugs/suicide compared to tornadoes and decided to keep it here as an educational tool for everybody!
Severe weather outbreak last week
Video example of sensationalizing at the link below causing excessive fear of tornadoes and severe storms compared to the real risk and especially compared to other MUCH HIGHER risks to people:
How many people are killed by a tornado each year, out of 329,000,000 in our country?
1,209 times more people die from a drug overdose vs tornadoes.
572 times more people die from suicide vs tornadoes.
How many people die each year from car accidents?
Answer: More than 46,000
How many more times is that than tornadoes?
575 times more people die from car crashes than from tornadoes!
