Manned missions to Mars (30 days on Mars/500 day trips each way) planned within 20 years

NASA is planning to send men to Mars by no later than the early 2040s. They'd spend 30 days on Mars. The roundtrip would take ~3 years. This is exciting but there are difficulties to deal with including muscle atrophy caused by weightlessness for 500 days in a row each way, radiation (especially the tiny cosmic particles as Mike said in another thread), stress from confinement/isolation, and danger of being so far from Earth if in need of medical or other help. All of these hazards have to be endured while having to do a demanding job from a cognitive standpoint.

I wonder if a medical doc will be included in the crew for the main purpose of helping a fellow crew member with any medical needs. Maybe two docs would be needed in case one doc has any problems? Opinions?

Thanks Larry!

Great topic.

As an atmospheric scientist, that was required to learn a tremendous amount about the sun, space weather and atmospheric conditions on other planets, I was once gung ho for this sort of thing.

Elon Musk's recent retarded statements, got me looking closer at his Mars venture, especially because he plans to put 1 million people on Mars.

I'm now, very strongly opposed to spending trillions of tax dollars on projects like this at a time in human history, when the budget is crushing us and the amount of additional knowledge to benefit mankind is minuscule compared to the massive benefits that same amount of money applied on planet earth to help people can have.

If Musk wants to flush his personal money down the toilet to make a name for himself because he's a selfish MEGALOMANIAC peddling FAKE realities on Mars.........go for it. He earned it.

I explained why Elon Musk's Mars, is a fake reality here:
