New Studies Find No Global Drought Trend Since 1902…Global Flood Magnitudes Decline with Warming

Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is claimed to intensify hydrological processes. Data analysis indicates it does not.

From the NoTricksZone

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/08/15/new-studies-find-no-global-drought-trend-since-1902global-flood-magnitudes-decline-with-warming/

With regard to drought, the global trends indicate there has actually been a de-intensification of meteorological (climate-related) drought from 1959-2014 relative to to 1902-1959.

“The results revealed that: 1) meteorological drought in most climate regions intensified during 1902–1958 but showed a wetting trend during 1959–2014.”

++++++++++++++

Less drought lines up exactly with my personal observations  using empirical data/measurements of the real atmosphere as an operational meteorologist the past 4+ decades.

Global climate models with great uncertainties  get trumped by real world data which is always a certainty.

                Energy transition is a hoax

There Is No Energy Transition, Just Energy Addition

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/03/12/there-is-no-energy-transition-just-energy-addition/

While wind and solar power are taking a larger piece out of a growing world primary energy pie, fossil fuels are expected to have more absolute growth through 2050.

https://i0.wp.com/wattsupwiththat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/energysources.webp?fit=1063%2C573&ssl=1

As Liberty Energy CEO Chris Wright explained in his viral video a few weeks ago, dishonest terminology surrounds the climate debate.  One of these terms is “Energy Transition”.  The term’s use gives the impression that there exists a quick, easy and scalable alternative to eliminate fossil fuel use without serious impact on people.

Current primary energy distribution by source, and forecasts by organizations like the EIA in their International Energy Outlook 2021, show that this “energy transition” is non-existent.  As you can see in the title graph above, and also in Liberty’s ESG report on Bettering Human Lives, no present quantity of primary energy generated by oil or gas is currently replaced by renewables.  A couple of headlines from the report that you don’t hear a lot:

  • Global primary energy use is about to grow by almost 50% between 2020 – 2050 as impoverished people rise from poverty;
  •
  • Oil consumption rises in all EIA scenarios. In their “Reference Scenario”, oil consumption rises at about 1 million bopd/year for the next 30 years, almost the same steady yearly increase of the last 5 decades;
  •
  • Natural gas consumption will continue to growth through 2050.

The reason for this growth is simple: fossil fuels are abundant, cheap and efficient to provide reliable and dense energy at scale.  They have helped to generate a quality-of-life revolution for a portion of humanity, and people in poverty who have missed out on this blessing rightfully want what you and I already have.

The rural and urban blend indicates a long-term warming of 0.89 °C/century since 1850, while the rural-only indicates 0.55 °C/century. This contradicts a common assumption that current thermometer-based global temperature indices are relatively unaffected by urban warming biases

China has now approved/building more new coal power than all existing US coal plants More provinces "jump on the bandwagon" China didn't get the "but renewables are cheaper" memo (because infinitely costly when no wind/sun) https://archive.ph/FOPTx

China’s new coal power spree continues as more provinces jump on the bandwagon

https://energyandcleanair.org/publication/chinas-new-coal-power-spree-continues-as-more-provinces-jump-on-the-bandwagon/

Key findings

  • The coal power plant permitting spree that started in summer 2022 has continued in the first half of 2023 and into July. From January to June, construction was started on 37 GW (gigawatts) of new coal power capacity, 52 GW was permitted of which 10 GW already moved into construction, while 41 GW of new projects were announced and 8 GW of previously shelved projects were revived. All of these parts of the project pipeline are currently running at a pace of more than one coal power plant per week.
  • 152 GW has been permitted and 169 GW announced since the start of the current spree in early 2022. This means that China is accelerating the additions of new coal power capacity during the current five-year plan period (2021–25) compared to either of the preceding two five-year plan periods.
  • China now has 243 GW of coal power under construction and permitted. When projects currently announced or in the preparation stage but not yet permitted are included, this number rises to 392 GW. This means that coal power capacity could increase by 23% to 33% from 2022 levels,

Amazing how they were able to abolish the law of photosynthesis!

They ignore the planet’s booming biosphere/massively greening up and instead, focus all their time looking for bad things happening on the planet and cherry pick them as evidence of a climate crisis.

Forget that we have effective pesticides and herbicides and technologies for crops to manage some of those bad things. Believe that,  the same conditions, supposedly beneficial for all the bad life, are somehow killing all the good life!

Totally forget the laws of agronomy and discard critical thinking and never fact check their stuff by going to sources with authentic data. Just believe the scary stories and false narratives about a climate crisis caused by a beneficial gas that’s only half the optimal level for plants and most life.

Here’s how we know this is dishonest, biased work practicing the ANTI scientific method.
Objective science tells us ALL sides and everything impacting the realm being discussed. Not just being selective to filter out things that contradict what the scientist wants to convince others of.
Objective science gives authentic weighting to EVERYTHING, including inconvenient very powerful facts/evidence that counter what the scientist wants to be true.

Sadly, climate science was hijacked 3 decades ago and now, this sort of shoddy work is what defines mainstream science to support the fake climate crisis.

It defies critical thinking to believe that a beneficial gas, at 50% the optimal level,  which is warming, the planet by 1 Deg. C and mostly  the coldest places……….which has increased the growing season by over a week and REDUCED frost/freeze damage risk significantly…………is actually causing a net harm to the exact plants/crops that are benefiting the most in this current climate optimum.

Slightly more disease?
Slightly higher insect pressure?

Sure, I get that.

But they take an authentic math equation like this (that might represent the weighting of goods vs bads of CO2/climate change:

5+4+3+2-1-1-1 = +11

And twist it into -1-1-1 =-3 and it’s killing the planet

Then tell us that +11 is actually -3.

The saddest part of this junk science is not that some dishonest scientists are displaying human cognitive bias. That’s to be expected.
It’s really pathetic because that’s what defines mainstream climate science in 2023!

The solution to save the planet is always to cut CO2 emissions.
Get rid of the exact reason we have all this wonderful technology.
Get rid of the synthetic fertilizers made with natural gas  boosting global food production/crop yields by 50%, including all the crops discussed in this article.

But the reason that we know that they must know that it can’t work is this:

They are just exploiting this scam to enrich their self serving interests. Whether its crony capitalism, dishonest science for fame/rewards, political agenda, ratings driven dishonest media or misled environmentalism………..it’s all based on fairly tale, manufactured schemes using completely impossible,  scenario’s that have a near 0 chance of ever coming anywhere near happening (other than on computer screens)  even if society was 100% on board with the scam.

The Australian Academy of Science: Science or Wokeness?

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/09/02/the-australian-academy-of-science-science-or-wokeness/

Conclusion: A Once-Esteemed Organisation’s Fall from Grace

Ridd concludes his article with a somber reflection on the state of the AAS:

“I have been saying for some time that many of our science institutions have become totally untrustworthy. By its wilful abandonment of quantitative analysis, the AAS has destroyed its reputation as a source of useful scientific advice… The Australian Academy of Science is now a joke.”

This article serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity of scientific institutions and how far they’ve fallen. When political agendas overshadow genuine scientific inquiry, it not only undermines the credibility of the institution but also has broader implications for public trust in science.

In an era where trust in institutions is already waning, it’s crucial for scientific bodies like the AAS to return to upholding the principles of genuine scientific research. The Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most treasured natural wonders, deserves nothing less.

They cherry pick items in most fields that are related to climate science.

If there  are 10 separate elements which define the understanding of a particular climate science realm, they intentionally discard everything that shows benefits in discussions.

Also with all the negatives that they use, there is an enormous amount of distorting and exaggerating.

If that were not true and they were being objective and honest, then most discussions would also include large parts about the massive benefits.

The stone cold fact is that the biggest impact from increasing CO2, by an extremely wide margin is being caused by its role in the indisputable law of photosynthesis.

The realm being impacted the most…………get’s the least coverage because their objective is activism NOT science.

Authentic science tells us all the comprehensive facts, including those the scientist doesn’t want to be true.
Activism tries to convince people to believe something so that, by controlling their opinion(s) you can generate enough support for your cause so that political actions will be taken.

If I’m trying to sell you my car or house, I tell you all the good things but not the bad ones that will scare off potential buyers.
That’s how people act when they are selling something. Use car dealers have a bad reputation because of this.

Science, however should tell us EVERYTHING. Good and bad because the mission for all authentic scientists should be to EDUCATE people so that they understand the topic.

Sadly, mainstream climate science is SELLING a fake crisis NOT reporting objective science or educating us with authentic science.

Blocking and its Response to Climate Change

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30956938/

Purpose of review:                    Atmospheric blocking events represent some of the most high-impact weather patterns in the mid-latitudes, yet they have often been a cause for concern in future climate projections. There has been low confidence in predicted future changes in blocking, despite relatively good agreement between climate models on a decline in blocking.

Summary:                    The term 'blocking' covers a diverse array of synoptic patterns, and hence a bewildering range of indices has been developed to identify events. Results are hence not considered fully trustworthy until they have been found using several different methods. Examples of such robust results are the underestimation of blocking by models, and an overall decline in future occurrence, albeit with a complex regional and seasonal variation. In contrast, hemispheric trends in blocking over the recent historical period are not supported by different methods, and natural variability will likely dominate regional variations over the next few decades.

VIJAY JAYARAJ: This World Leader Is Calling Out The Western Climate Hypocrites

https://dailycaller.com/2023/09/08/opinion-this-world-leader-is-calling-out-the-western-climate-hypocrites-vijay-jayaraj/

Mr. Singh pointed out the inconvenient fact that renewables are not a realistic alternative to fossil fuels for generating large amounts of electricity. The requirement to back up wind and solar with batteries increases their cost by nearly fivefold, he said.

The cost of renewables is not just an issue in developing economies. Even in the wealthiest countries, wind and solar are notorious for increasing the overall cost of power.

Writer Michael Shellenberger argues that consumers have been bearing much of these costs. For example, he says that “renewables had contributed to electricity prices rising 50% in Germany and five times more in California than in the rest of the U.S. despite generating just 17% of the state’s electricity.”

Availability and affordability of raw materials for batteries are also a growing concern. Contrary to popular claims that the prices of storage systems have declined, data show that their raw materials are becoming more expensive.

Why CO2 is Not a Pollutant

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/09/10/why-co2-is-not-a-pollutant/

From MasterResource

    Mike Maguire

                        September 10, 2023 9:23 pm

All the scientific measurements tell us clearly that earth is having a climate optimum because of the warming of 1 Deg. C and the best weather/climate in the previous 1,000 years (the last time that it was this warm, during the Medieval WARM Period).

At least this warm during the Roman WARM Period-2,000 years ago.
At least this warm during the Minoan WARM period~3,500 years ago.
But we are not as warm in the higher latitudes as during the Holocene Climate OPTIMUM-9,000 to 5,000 years ago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_climatic_optimum

Of 140 sites across the western Arctic, there is clear evidence for conditions that were warmer than now at 120 sites. At 16 sites for which quantitative estimates have been obtained, local temperatures were on average 1.6±0.8 °C higher during the optimum than now. Northwestern North America reached peak warmth first, from 11,000 to 9,000 years ago, but the Laurentide Ice Sheet still chilled eastern Canada. Northeastern North America experienced peak warming 4,000 years later. Along the Arctic Coastal Plain in Alaska, there are indications of summer temperatures 2–3 °C warmer than now.[10] Research indicates that the Arctic had less sea ice than now.[1
++++++++++++++++++
But this is just from the positive contribution to life on this greening planet from the slight beneficial warming over the past century.
This includes growing seasons extended more than a week in the coldest places and to higher latitudes which is especially positive for food production.

When you dial in the enormous positive contribution of increasing CO2 from the indisputable law of photosynthesis, which is currently less than half the optimal level of 900 parts per million, then this current climate OPTIMUM for most life greatly exceeds the best of any other time frame since humans have existed.

Not despite climate change/global warming but exactly BECAUSE OF it.

Our planet continues to massively green up from the increase in CO2.

Here is irrefutable evidence using empirical data to show that the increase in CO2 is causing a huge increase in crop yields/world food production and a booming biosphere on our greening planet.
We can separate the CO2 effect out from other factors effecting crops and plants with many thousands of studies that hold everything else constant, except for elevated CO2.
Observing and documenting the results of experiments with elevated CO2 levels, tell us what increasing CO2 does to many hundreds of plants. It’s the most powerful effect from CO2 on our planet by an extremely wide margin.

CO2 is the building block for all life in every single field of authentic science.

However, CO2 has been defined as pollution when it comes to misguided climate activism, political agenda/government policies, crony capitalism, corrupted science and the dishonest media.

‘Doomerism’: Why scientists disagree with Biden on 1.5 C

https://www.eenews.net/articles/doomerism-why-scientists-disagree-with-biden-on-1-5-c/

“If we don’t keep it below 1.5 degrees centigrade, we lose it all,” he said. “We don’t get to turn it around.”

Last month, Biden went a step further by claiming that there was no way to reset the planet if warming topped 1.5 C.

“Our grandchildren and great-grandchildren are either going to have lives that are decent and honorable and good, or they’re going to be in real trouble,” Biden said at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in California. “If we go to about 1.5 centigrade degrees above where we are now, we’re done. There’s no way to turn it around, according to the scientists that tell us.”

+++++++++++++++

This atmospheric scientist continues to insist that we are having a climate optimum for most life on this massively greening planet that has featured the best weather/climate since the last time that it was this warm.....The Medieval Climate Optimum/Warm Period, 1,000 years ago. That is based on all the authentic science/empirically measured data/observations.

The optimal level of CO2 for most life is just over double the current 420 parts per million. The optimal global temperature is still slightly warmer than this. Despite the warming, cold still kills 10 times more people and 200+ times more life than heat.

Biden is totally making this up for political agenda/corruption in government and science, crony capitalism, fake/misguided environmentalism and dishonest media reporting.

So that is what he thinks defines: “Our grandchildren and great-grandchildren are either going to have lives that are decent and honorable and good, or they’re going to be in real trouble,”

We are in deep trouble right now. Throw the bum out so that we can start fixing it!

Exxon Knew: California Sues Oil Giants for Committing Free Speech

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/09/17/exxon-knew-california-sues-oil-giants-for-committing-free-speech/

The Californian lawsuit contains this gem;

3. Defendants are large companies in the fossil fuel industry who have misled consumers and the public about climate change for decades. Defendants have known since at least  the 1960s that fossil fuels produce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution that  would warm the planet and change our climate. Defendants’ own scientists knew as early as the  1950s that these climate impacts would be catastrophic, and that there was only a narrow window  of time in which communities and governments could take action before the consequences  became catastrophic.

4. Rather than warn consumers, the public, and governments, however, Defendants mounted a disinformation campaign beginning at least as early as the 1970s to discredit the  burgeoning scientific consensus on climate change; deny their own knowledge of climate change- related threats; create doubt in the minds of consumers, the media, teachers, policymakers, and  the public about the reality and consequences of the impacts of burning fossil fuels; and delay the  necessary transition to a lower-carbon future.

So, they knew that life on our massively greening planet would be experiencing the current climate optimum from the increase in CO2? (which is still just half  the optimal level for most life)
Farmers should be outraged because they weren’t prepared with enough storage for the record breaking crops (-:

The increase in CO2 has been humanities biggest gift to our planet by a wide margin.

In an honest, just world the major sources of beneficial CO2 would be getting a Nobel Prize for greening up the planet and massively increasing food production!

Based on AUTHENTIC science, as beneficial CO2 continues to increase, the planet will get greener and greener as most life loves it!

The California vs. Big Oil suit is going nowhere because the climate science inside is blog level trash written by low info activists. It's truly malpractice.   But, it wouldn't take much to improve the science in the complaint to make it very problematic in a California jury trial.

UK Migratory Birds ‘in freefall’ over Climate Change–BBC

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/09/21/uk-migratory-birds-in-freefall-over-climate-change-bbc/

    Mike Maguire

                      September 22, 2023 7:44 am

The biggest threat to life on this planet by a wide margin is cold. It’s actually why migratory birds need to migrate(to go to where warmth continues to provides food in the Winter).

This article wants us to believe that LESS cold in the Winter, which is reducing the greatest risk to life and resulting in less need for migration(which carries a lot of risk) is actually causing harm to the creatures that it benefits the most.

And making this truly absurd is the complete ignoring of the indisputable role that CO2 plays in the law of photosynthesis. The increase in this beneficial gas is massively greening up the planet and increasing food for creatures that have plant based diets(including seeds) to go with the less harsh Winters.

You can make a case for changes in the insect population being a factor for birds like this that feed on insects but insects benefit greatly from milder Winters.

Global climate models are broken and too warm because they use equations that amplify the forcing from CO2 in greenhouse gas warming by almost 50%.

RADIATIVE FORCING BY CO2 OBSERVED AT TOP OF ATMOSPHERE FROM 2002-2019

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1911.10605.pdf

“The IPCC Fifth Assessment Report predicted 0.508±0.102 Wm−2RF resulting from this CO2 increase, 42% more forcing than actually observed. The lack of quantitative long-term global OLR studies may be permitting inaccu-racies to persist in general circulation model forecasts of the effects of rising CO2 or other greenhouse gasses.”

However, look at what models based on photosynthesis and more reality based metrics show for the next 80 years. They’ve been verifying nicely during this period of beneficial warming for most life on this greening planet.

Global Green Up Slows Warming

https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/146296/global-green-up-slows-warming

“The paper’s authors reviewed more than 250 published articles that have used satellite data, modeling, and field observations, to understand the causes and consequences of global greening. Among the key results, the authors noted that on a global scale greening can be attributed to the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Rising levels of carbon dioxide increase the rate of photosynthesis and growth in plants.”

“It is ironic that the very same carbon emissions responsible for harmful changes to climate are also fertilizing plant growth,” said co-author Jarle Bjerke of the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research”

NOAA and the Media Continue to Misinform About Climate Change and Extreme Weather

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2023/09/25/noaa-and-the-media-continue-to-misinform-about-climate-change-and-extreme-weather/

Is extreme weather costing us more as a proportion of GDP? No.

Pielke goes on to say that the entire episode “is an embarrassment.”

I worked in a @NOAA cooperative institute for 16 years & it is an important agency, staffed by smart, thoughtful scientists But the “billion dollar” disasters “connect the dots” propaganda is an embarrassment.

Despite the evidence that extreme weather events haven’t become more common or severe during the recent period of modest warming, the “connect the dots” propaganda continues today courtesy of disaster loaded NOAA press releases like the one that resulted this flurry of stories in the mainstream media in recent days, uncritically parroting NOAA’s claims.

Looking at the Scientific American headline, just how does “a record number of billion-dollar disasters show US isn’t ready for climate change”? According to hurricane data, the number of hurricanes making landfall in the United States has declined in recent decades. Hurricanes do billions of dollars more in damage compared to 30 years ago because more people live on hurricane prone coast, building and developing more expensive properties there.

The same holds true for destructive tornadoes and many other types of extreme weather.

Thanks much, Anthony for the wonderful article!

Global warming/climate change has decreased the meridional temperature gradient. by warming the highest latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere the most by a wide margin. Warming the coldest places, in the coldest time of year and the nights the most.
They want you to believe that less extreme temperature gradients increase extreme weather.

Not on this planet if you follow the laws of physics and meteorology!

Global cooling is what would INCREASE many extreme weather realms!

With the earth massively greening up, of course evapotranspiration has also increased a great deal.

Global Green Up Slows Warming
https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/146296/global-green-up-slows-warming

In the last 60 years, the United States Corn Belt has doubled the number of tightly packed rows of corn and tripled the corn yields. The result has been like a science experiment in agronomy during the Summer/growing season, This 10 state area has seen regional increases in dew points of 5+ Deg. F on many occasions entirely from the added evapotranspiration of the corn.
This has created a micro climate for around 4 months of the year in this area.

The same impact is happening in other agricultural areas. Also, most places with natural vegetation that’s been greatly greening up with the greater foliage transpiring more.
