I got a wonderful email from Kate McCallum today to share with our readers.

Alex, her husband started this site over 2 decades ago and suddenly died in 2017. A devastating loss for Kate.

After a brief stint by Julie as moderator, I took over and have been moderator here the past 6 years.  I also took over ownership of MarketForum this past April.

Hi Mike,

I wonder if I was writing to you at the wrong address. I don’t really recall now where I sent messages, only that there was a recent one when I saw something you posted on the site that I wanted to respond to.

If I find any of my prior messages, I will resend them to this address

I’m deeply sorry that I abandoned you and the site… It’s a complicated matter that doesn’t really have a rational explanation.  Suffice it to say that life throws us curve balls and if we’re lucky or clever we may catch them or duck.  Or not…

I am very happy with what you’ve done with Market Forum.  I intended to make that suggestion long ago, in fact, I think I did, but it may have been in one of the messages that I didn’t get to you.  I am simply happy and grateful to you that Market Forum continues and thrives. It’s a great website now and i enjoy browsing in recent days.  It’s what Alex would have wanted, but it’s not something I could have done myself.

If you need me to sign something to authorize you to go forward, let me know and I will happily do that.  I also have a stack of old checks from Investing Channel, never cashed.  You are surely entitled to those payments.  if you’re interested in pursuing the matter, I’ll send you all the details.

I have left USA since we were last in touch. I have remarried (a year ago) and living in South Australia.  (By a quirk of fate, my husband’s name is Axel!).  It’s very far from my old life and all the memories.   It’s what I needed to do to survive the loss of my precious Alex.

I wish you success and good fortune. I still think of you every time I hear or read about “climate change.”  You made sense to me, and to Alex.

All the best

Kate

Hi again, Kate!

That was a wonderful message.

Congrats on your new marriage and new life.

You have nothing to be sorry about. We had numerous conversations after Julie bailed and you wanted me to take over, which is what Alex had been trying to get me to do for a couple of years prior to his sudden death.

I remember how devastated you were over losing Alex.

Times have changed a great deal on the internet in the last 2 decades but MarketForum's  messages will always stress authentic truths that respect all opinions and people, especially when they differ from the moderator.

And use rock solid/authentic data to illustrate trading/markets, science, weather/climate, environmentalism, farming, chess, humanity and politics. And respect all human beings in all countries, regardless of the circumstances.

An ANTI echo chamber that looks at everything from BOTH sides, using the scientific method!

Alex told me one time in an email, that one of his favorite words was "authentic"!

Kate,

We're so happy to finally hear back from you and that you're doing well.

Mike

Only 147 days until Guy Fawkes Day (November 5th)!

Guy Fawkes Night 2024 (Bonfire Night)

November 5

Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is a traditional British celebration that commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. This annual event is marked by spectacular fireworks displays, bonfires, and the burning of effigies, including the “Guy.” Guy Fawkes Night is an occasion for communities to come together, enjoy the festivities, and remember the historical events surrounding the plot to blow up the British Parliament. It is a night filled with excitement, bonfire warmth, and dazzling fireworks.

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain, involving bonfires and fireworks displays. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605 O.S., when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. The Catholic plotters had intended to assassinate Protestant king James I and his parliament. Celebrating that the king had survived, people lit bonfires around London. Months later, the Observance of 5th November Act mandated an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.

I must say that this note and "revelation" is a welcomed bit of closer to the Kate/Alex story for some of us here on the Forum.

I'll call it a happy ending , if I may. Maybe "Beginning" is a more appropriate word to use.

Thanks, John.

For sure this leaves us with an appreciation of the history here with a great feeling.

Kate's response today:

That’s absolutely fine, Mike.  I wish I could find one that I sent after. I saw your post on a happy marriage… It struck me that Alex would have been very pleased to see it on the forum.  I’ve searched my outgoing messages and I’m not finding the ones I sent to you… I’m thinking I might have replied to the moderator on the forum assuming that was you. But maybe that was a mistake…

Kate,

I try to always respond to "contact the moderator" but would bet that I missed a couple in the past and I totally believe you!

You picked a winner!

In your honor, here it is again:
