I know Mike likes good news stories, here is one.
So we have a couple family friends affected by the Spencer Iowa floods this last week. A few stories have emerged that shows what folks are made of.
The town had a 500 year flood, whatever that means, 30 years ago it had a 100 year flood.
It’s a town of about 11,000 in NW Iowa at the confluence of two small rivers. The area had 10-15 inches of rain on already saturated soils over a couple days.
The town quickly lost power, water and the sewer system went down. It was isolated via all roads in a short period. Nearly every house lost basement contents and probably half lost the first floor.
A local farm supply store had a few generators and gas water pumps. The manager donated them to a couple service organizations rather than selling them first come first served. He figured more folks would be helped that way, he had more in stock within a couple days he sold, regular price. The big box store took all their sales off, regular price on everything.
Walmart to their credit had a semi of bottled water in their parking lot to give away within 24 hours.
Boats appeared from all over to help evacuate.
The local porta-potty guy placed all his inventory, which was probably around a 100, all around the community and maintained them without being asked or asking for payment as far as I know.
Red Cross trucks were waiting as soon as the first road became passible. They had food trucks driving around all day, every day. Bleach and cleaning supplies being given out. Cots and bedding placed in a few evacuation centers along with portable showers.
FEMA there the next day.
Billy Graham bus there offering crisis counseling and accepting disaster donations. Yeah.
Lots more I’m probably not aware of.
Two individual stories.
A person from Colorado had a week’s fishing trip planned. They decided instead to volunteer at a distribution center to help unload, sort and distribute supplies, the whole week of their vacation. No connection to the community.
Our friends lost their basement contents but no real big loss, easy cleanup. After the first day mom, dad and 10 year old, along with her sister and niece from out of state volunteered at a distribution center packing supply boxes. Cleaning supplies, toiletries, food that sort of thing. All week.
They had a next door neighbor that wasn’t that nice a guy. Couldn’t talk to him without him going all MAGA, FJB, and them damn Mexicans, the gays, communists and the democrats hate America. Our friends are a young couple pretty liberal, they avoided him.
Well after a week’s time, coming home late each day they find their lawn mowed, with all the rain it was getting over grown. They asked the neighbor’s gown son thinking maybe he did it, but it was the old man. He told them he knew they had been volunteering and it was something he could do to help.
I’m thinking maybe their relationship has improved.
Lots of stories like that coming out.
As an aside FEMA in 2022 redrew the 500 year flood maps to encompass less of the area. Some families paid flood insurance premiums for many years without claims only to drop it and get wiped out two years later. Some houses outside the 500 year zone are total losses, foundations caving in.
Great story, mcfarmer!
Thanks for sharing!
With regards to these 500 year floods and 1 in 1,000 year event terms that didn't exist previously and have suddenly come out of nowhere the past few years to replace the previous terms......they are political/unscientific terms.
Same as the climate crisis. Carbon pollution and so on.
Extreme weather events overall have NOT increased.
Heavy rains..........yes because the atmosphere can hold 7% more moisture. But that added moisture doesn't suddenly turn 100 year events into 500 and 1,000 year events.
NATURAL VARIATION is always the cause.
A 10 inch rain from 100 years ago can be a 10.7 inch rain in 2024. That extra .7 inches doesn't launch us from a 100 year event to a 1,000 year event.
Rain events like we saw in the Upper Midwest are actually expected to happen with a LESS THAN 100 year return rate for the United States, with them happening at numerous different locations during that period,
At any specific location, one would expect the MUCH LOWER frequency.
I'll state this for the umpteenth time here:
As such, the prevailing principle that determines records like this is stated below with the "Golden Rule" because THE WEATHER NOT CLIMATE played such a critical role.
++++++++++++++
It really boils down to this, once again(Cliff Mass can be counted on as an elite source for using objective, authentic science)
https://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-golden-rule-of-climate-extremes.html
The GoldenRule
Considering the substantial confusion in the media about this critical issue, let me provide the GOLDENRULE OF CLIMATE EXTREMES. Here it is:
The more extreme a climate or weather record is, the greater the contribution of natural variability.
Or to put it a different way, the larger or more unusual an extreme, the higher proportion of the extreme is due to natural variability.

Here's some HONEST perspective on historical rainfall extremes/records using all the comprehensive evidence for such events. The data DOES NOT LIE. Its the media and scientists doing that.

So what % of people that read alarmist articles like this at the top, also check comprehensive historical data like this in the thread above?
1 in a million?
That's why its been so easy to hijack climate science and even rewrite climate history. No speculation. They did that with 100% backed evidence.

Rain and H2O (gas and liquid) are needed for life on this planet to exist.
So is CO2, another beneficial gas....... which is NOT carbon pollution as its NOT even carbon.

This source displays a blatant bias when it comes to climate change.
Wanna know how to tell?
Anybody that uses the term "carbon pollution" for carbon dioxide is either not a scientist or is a blatantly biased scientist playing politics.
Using that term, carbon pollution is scientifically, exactly like using the term hydrogen pollution to describe water vapor/H2O in the air.
We know that a water molecule is formed from 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen. Water/H2O is neither hydrogen or oxygen. It's a totally different compound/molecule, using atoms held together by covalent bonds. It's essential for all life on this planet.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Exactly the same with CO2/carbon dioxide. It's formed from 2 atoms of oxygen and 1 atom of carbon. It is NOT oxygen and it certainly is not the solid, carbon. It's a totally different compound/molecule, with 1 C atom, covalently bonded with 2 O atoms. It's an essential GAS! At 426 parts per million, CO2 is less than 50% of the optimal level for most life(assuming that most animals eat plants or something that ate plants).

Carbon is a SOLID! Thousands of compounds have carbon atoms in them but they are NOT CARBON.

We know exactly why people use the ANTI science term, carbon pollution for CO2.
When you hear a source using that term or read it, you can be certain that they are either scientifically ignorant on this topic or intentionally using it to try to trick people into believing that the beneficial gas, CO2 is actually a pollutant and is bad, like black carbon or solid carbon particulate matter in the air.
Frustrating that you took an opportunity to comment on folks setting their differences aside and pulling together during a time of adversity and instead got up on a soap box and gave the same sermon everyone has heard many, many times.
A brief explanation of the flood occurrences would have been helpful, but regurgitating the whole CO2 tome is why I seldom check in.
But, you do what you think is best. I hope you accept this as friendly feedback, and given in the desire to see this forum improve.
Thanks very much, mcfarmer!
We appreciate your contributions.
You are always welcome back……….but I can’t promise you that my response will line up perfectly with your liberal political affiliation.
This is an ANTI echo chamber and people have a right to respond and share with what’s in their heart and minds without being chastised for it.
if a person's very welcomed post contains non factual information, assume that our moderator will use authentic information to correct it.
mcfarmer,
I've been on vacation with my family since late last week with only limited time to post here.
However, I have a few minutes now to address this better:
1. I apologize for unintentionally offending you.
2. You should know by now, what my mission is here as an atmospheric scientist and moderator and you addressed the post directly to me (in a very friendly way-much appreciated).
https://www.marketforum.com/about/
Exposing the fake climate crisis was actually at the top of reasons that I agreed to take this job in 2018. Your thread, contained 3 different references to an extreme climate crisis term "500 year flood". As an atmospheric scientist committed to FIGHTING HARD to teach authentic science about weather/climate(my profession), which means debunking extreme, cherry picking and distorted interpretations from gate keepers that specialize in using verbiage and terms like "500 year flood" or 1 in a 1,000 year event" to exploit people's lack of training about weather/climate.
Since I had limited time, my response was to do address that term. You even mentioned "whatever that means" about a 500 year flood, suggesting that you don't know............so I also provided some links that explain extreme rains, with records and the worst floods in history for you to understand extreme rain events better.
Did you even read them?

I am more than a moderator here, mcfarmer. I am a teacher that generously shares my teaching in every realm in my life. Coaching 4,800 kids as a chess coach the past 27 years, for instance. More than anything I love learning new things and sharing them and learning new things from others here that share what they know.
Again, did you read the links sent from metmike being the teacher, generously sharing his area of expertise?
3. I also can't help but try to be a teacher on how to treat other people with respect and communicate in a way that is authentic. That means standing up for the truth, calling out people that sell messages which contradict the truth........but still accepting them as friends, DESPITE extreme disagreements.
4. It also means overlooking personal attacks directed at me and NEVER, EVER make personal attacks on others.
5. It also means trying to characterize others sincerely/honestly and if they disagree with that, THEY KNOW THEMSELVES BEST............immediately adjust statements that unintentionally created hurt in them, to undo the hurt. But the key is that the other person must also be honest and not be asking for something unreasonable. For instance, if somebody clearly demonstrates a trait or position all the time here, it's unreasonable for them to expect to not be labeled with what the objective facts state about them.
6. Much of this does not apply to your post and this actually has ZERO to do with what you wanted to discuss but nobody here can tell another person, how to expand beyond the initial topic based on what THEY FEEL is relevant. I feel that sharing this information with you is critical for us to understand each other AND GET ALONG, like mature adults do that don't attack each other but instead, have a civil conversation.
7. With that in mind, I made my points based on where my passion lies regarding the fake climate crisis that related to the 500 year flood terminology. Would you like to carry on the conversation WITHOUT THAT now?
The ball is in your court. Knowing your sensitivity, I'll avoid similar posts unless you bring in similar terms again, that require metmike the atmospheric scientist to put his teachers hat on.
I will also show, as I did at other links how much rain fell in this area during this extreme rain event to help others understand the gravity of the flooding
Your friend,
metmike
Also, your liberal points of view are desperately needed here since Joj, the liberal, who is Jewish stopped posting late last year after my many posts condemning Israel for their genocide and blatant human rights violations.
In the past, you’ve posted dozens of positive, insightful and enlightening, topics …..this last one included.
So of course we would like to read more from you!
