LAS VEGAS FAIR 118 17 3 NW7G20 29.75F 6HR MIN TEMP: 107; 6HR MAX TEMP: 120

So, Las Vegas made it all of the way to 120 F. That beats their old all-time record high by 3! The prior record of 117 had been set 5 times.

WOW!!!!!  THE ONES I KNOW THAT LIVE IN THOSE AREAS SAY :"OH, IT'S NOT REALLY HOT, BECAUSE OF LOW HUMIDITY."  THEY CAN HAVE IT!

AS I 'SPEAK".. IT'S 116 WITH A REAL FEEL OF 111.... DEW = 14 / H = 3

Thanks, Larry!

Because the air is so dry there, this is one of the places that is experiencing a bit more global warming from increasing CO2.

For the most part though, its the coldest places warming up the most in the Winter.

Interestingly, DRY places are also warming faster than HUMID places for the same reason. LESS H2O to absorb radiation and more opportunity for CO2 to do its warming thing.

++++++++++++

The humid tropics and  humid US Midwest are NOT experiencing the same warming in the Summer as the dry places are and especially the cold places in the Winter are.

In the Midwest SUMMERS, climate change has REDUCED EXTREME HEAT for instance.......though thats an exception, thanks to photosynthesis and evapotranspiration/higher dew points/moisture.

+++++++++++

Also, since it's July, the hottest month of the year, most of the records set for the entire month will also be all time highs.

This map was from way back in 2012.

Since then, WA, OR, CO and SC have set NEW all time highs.

The 1930s set all time records for 24 of the 50 state record temperature highs.

Hey Mike,

I’m amazed at ND’s state high of 121. Only 4 states (all in the desert SW) have been hotter!!

Yes, extra impressive that far north, Larry!

Part of the extreme heat in several 1930s years with 1936 really standing out.

my first Summer here in evansville IN doing tv weather for WEHT was 1983.

It was brutally hot with numerous days above 100.

We show the record high for that date  every day we are on tv.

i was constantly comparing the forecast to the record highs that Summer.

i was most astounded by a 7 day stretch in the record books for there in 1936 when the temperature got to 103 or higher every day.

WOW

After Sunday’s amazing 120, it was “only” 115 yesterday. But today it went back up to 119!

LV was 117 at 3PM PDT. They’re going to be very close to 119-120 again. What an amazing heatwave! Keep in mind that 117 had been the all-time record (back to 1937) before 3 days ago.

Edit: 118 was today’s high!

Vegas hit 118 today, another record. It has on 4 of the last 5 days hit 118-120, all of which are hotter than the 117 record hottest that existed before this summer.

Larry,

You do realize that these extreme temperatures, high enough to smash records in Vegas would NOT have been this extreme.......in setting records,  without the urban heat island effect, right?

A Case Study: Urban Heat Islands in Las Vegas, Nevada

Understanding Urbanization Impacts on Urban Warming

https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/a3ccc3832aa34a72bb522bd98d717cf9

The population of Las Vegas has grown significantly since the 1960s, increasing from 273,000 people in 1972 to 2,904,079 in 2023. Since the launch of the first Landsat satellite, this number has increased by over 700%.

This study focuses on the period from 2001 to 2021, a span of 20 years during which Las Vegas experienced substantial urbanization and rapid change. The urban area expanded by an average of 55 square kilometers per year, with a population growth rate as high as 101.6%. During this time, the urban population surged, city boundaries rapidly expanded, and new residential and commercial areas continually emerged.

Urban Sprawl from 2001 to 2021

Las Vegas urban expansion is closely linked to changes in land cover, with alterations in land use during urbanization directly affecting the city's ecosystems and the living environment of its residents. therefore, land information will be extracted from satellite imagery data, and land cover classifications will be obtained through supervised classification methods to examine land use changes from 2001 to 2021.

And while its certainly VERY hot in the West, we are nowhere close to the top 10 hottest months for the United States:

The most amazing thing about heat records is that 4 of the top 10 hottest months in the US were in the 1930's!!

In the last 40 years, only 3 have featured a top 10 hot month for the United States: 2012, 2006 and 2022!

Hey Mike,

It is good that you brought up increased UHI as metro population has increased substantially as it undoubtedly is a factor that should be considered. Without that increased UHI, this week like just about any other week would have been cooler. We agree on that 100%. But how much cooler? Whether or not any high this week would have met the old record of 117 or exceeded it had the UHI not grown since the last times they hit 117 is I assume an unknown. Maybe or maybe not. But regardless, this has been a very impressive heatwave!

Agreed, Larry!

This is very extreme heat.

I found this interesting.

Las Vegas has had a hottest temperature of the year of 115+ Deg. F  on 26 different occasions.

Some of them were pretty far back, before any UHI impact. The 118 Deg. F in 1931 for instance.

I would bet with high confidence, that the same weather pattern as 1931, superimposed on 2024 with the almost 3 million people living in the area would have resulted in temperatures a couple degrees HOTTER than this.

Las Vegas - Highest Temperature for Each Year

https://www.currentresults.com/Yearly-Weather/USA/NV/Las-Vegas/extreme-annual-las-vegas-high-temperature.php

Since 1949 the temperature extremes were observed at McCarran International Airport. Before then, the weather station was at downtown Las Vegas.

+++++++++++++++++

I'll have to compare that location, at the airport to the map above which displays the amount of added temperatures measured by that project.

The  Mccarran airport is in Paradise, NV:

https://www.eflights.ie/info/airport/McCarran-International-Airport/

This was the urban heat mapping project results. We can see where Paradise, NV is located, just south of Las Vegas and embedded inside an area with significant warming from the UHI.

There are 5 temperature color bars. Looks like Paradise in mostly the 3rd hottest color with patches of the 2nd hottest color. This corresponds, roughly to an increase of +3-5 Deg. F compared to outlying areas.

If we added that to temperatures  BEFORE the huge increase in the UHI, we would get numerous readings, potentially at or just above 120 Deg. F, which was the NEW record this year.

This is just an estimate.

More interesting stuff on extreme heat:

Places With Highest Temperatures

North America's highest temperature ever recorded is 134 degrees Fahrenheit (56.7 degrees Celsius), which occurred at Greenland Ranch in Death Valley, California on July 10, 1913. No other United States location has come close to experiencing such intense heat.

The 134 °F reading in Death Valley was declared the world's most extreme high temperature by the World Meteorological Organization in 2012. After reviewing records, WMO concluded that a September 13, 1922 measurement of 136.4 °F (58 °C) in El Azizia, Libya resulted from errors, rather than exceptional heat.

During the century that followed setting the world record, the hottest day in Death Valley was a relatively balmy 129 °F. The Mojave Desert site didn't heat up to 130 °F again until August 2020.

Temperatures over 125 °F (48.9 °C) are unusual events, even in the hottest places of the United States, except Death Valley. Extreme heat in the country is largely confined to a small region of lower elevations in the Mojave Desert. The area stretches roughly from Palm Springs to Phoenix and extends north up the Colorado River to Las Vegas.

Here is a sampling of places and dates when the thermometer has climbed to lofty highs.
