POST OF THE WEEK GOES TO MCFARM!!!!

NOAA data reveals USA heatwaves much hotter in past: ’38/50 states or 76% recorded their high-temperature records before 1955 – 43 states measured their high temp records in or before 1985′

Hi Dr. Overpeck.  I'm not sure what increase you're talking about.  Heatwaves can be defined as a ≥3-consecutive-day period where the daily maximum temperature (Tmax) at a location is ≥90th percentile for the date. Using this, one can compute the number of heatwave days (HWD) by summing the number of days per year with heatwave conditions at each station, then averaging across them. An analysis that Richard Lyon and I completed today of USHCNd stations with ≥100-years of daily Tmax / Tmin data shows that the trend is down slightly since 1895, with a maximum during the 1930s. How did that happen 1.6 trillion tons of CO₂ emissions ago? In fact, of the top 10 years with the greatest number of HWD in the United States, none have been in the last 30-years, and eight of those were prior to 1955. Of the top 20, fifteen were prior to 1955, and only two have been in the 21st century, and none of which have been in the last decade.
