Because there was no vaccine and we had no immunity, the COVID virus hit incredibly hard, especially older people and those with pre existing conditions.
However, younger people that had COVID and recovered were carriers that were KILLING the vulnerable ones. Ther is no way to separate all the young people from the rest of the population.
Initially, we shut everything down as a very SMART precaution that paid dividends when it turned out MUCH WORSE than expected. So bad in fact, that many to most of the big city hospitals were OVERFLOWING with patients that had severe, often deadly symptoms. Many hospitals had patients lining the hallways, the overflow of rooms that already had more very sick people with COVID that they were designed for.
Intensive care units were stuffed with people dying from COVID on respirators.
My nephew, Phil is a respiratory therapist. He was traveling to hospitals in different states where they desperately needed him the most. They were paying him triple time!
He could still afford to pay the rent for his house in the Detroit area for a couple of years, while he paid for the rent in the different cities he was needed in.
Before the vaccine and anybody had any natural immunity and our hospitals were already overflowing and even turning sick people away in some cases because they had no room, there WAS NO CHOICE BUT TO KEEP THINGS SHUT DOWN until COVID diminished enough for our medical community respond to all the sick people.

The size of the COVID virus is too small to be filtered by a cloth mask. However, wearing a mask, if YOU have COVID protects other people from your coughs and sneezes that can take COVID loaded mucus and saliva amd launch them 6 feet out from your body.
However, N 95 masks DO filter out 95% of the particles which are as tiny in size as the COVID virus. This is what the 95 in the name stands for.
But They were caught unprepared, without enough N95 masks for everyone, so they deceived people to try to conserve the N95 masks.
They told us that cloth masks worked to protect us and to NOT buy the N95 masks. Save the N95s for the workers that need ed them.

During the shortage of N95 masks p, they were costing up to 50 times that.
My wife suggested that I donate ours to a hospital.
