In a stunning move, ABC announced Wednesday, Sept. 17 that it was taking "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" off the air indefinitely, after FCC chairman Brendan Carr threatened Kimmel and the network on a podcast over comments Kimmel made about the man charged with shooting Charlie Kirk.
In a year of gutless moves by major media companies, this may be the most gutless. ABC should be ashamed.
Earlier Wednesday, Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, threatened ABC, Disney and Jimmy Kimmel over a Kimmel monologue about Charlie Kirk, ominously saying, "We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
A quick reminder that Carr is the chairman of the FCC, not a mob boss in a third-rate gangster movie. It's another example of Donald Trump's administration's threats to free speech, or at least free speech that doesn't praise Trump. Anything the president doesn't agree with or takes offense to, you're all out of luck.

Mike pointed out the true path in a previous thread.
The last significant game changer in American politics that deployed the message of love extinguishing hate, was Martin Luther King. But MLK jr had an ally in the White House in LBJ. Were a messenger to rise up and capture the hearts of Americans they would NOT find an ally in the White House. They would find a president looking to exploit his politidal opponents with his executive powers. He said so: "I will go after those on the left who have incited this violence." This same Trump has referred to his political opponents as vermin. Incitement indeed.
I fear, I'm sorry to say, this has parallels to the Reichstag fire. It's what authoritarians do.
"First they came for John Bolton....."
I don't know where this is heading, but I fear for the end of the Republic.
The things that Fox has stated this past month are 1 million times more offensive and egregious compared to what Kimmel said.
The difference is that the 1 station that lies all day long for Trump is adored by him, anybody else that criticizes anything about Trump or MAGA are targeted by Trump. ............the heck with free speech!

VP Vance is on Watters/Fox tonight:
"The Biden administration was after phantom White Supremacists that don't exist in this country"
On the investigations and objective to eliminate the far left organizations in our country.
"If we had done this sooner, Charlie Kirk would still be with us today"!
This is just the usual stuff on his show. I actually liked Vance a great deal a few years ago.
Watters celebrated the decision by ABC to take Kimmel off the air..........OF COURSE!

Republican Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, a leading candidate to be Donald Trump’s vice president, liked tweets in 2016 and 2017 that harshly criticized Trump and his policies — including one speculating that Vance could serve in former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s administration.
Other tweets liked by Vance said Trump committed “serial sexual assault,” called him “one of USA’s most hated, villainous, douchey celebs,” and, in a since-removed set of tweets, harshly criticized Trump’s response to the deadly 2017 White nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia – something Vance now defends Trump over.
Vance’s past anti-Trump stances have been well-documented, but these new examples, unearthed by an extensive review of Vance’s past social media activity, demonstrate they were more widespread and scathing than previously known. As CNN’s KFile previously reported, Vance deleted past anti-Trump tweets ahead of his announcement in July 2021 that he would run for the open Ohio Senate seat. Vance once privately wondered whether Trump was ‘America’s Hitler’ in February 2016, and a few months later wrote in The Atlantic that Trump was “cultural heroin.”
I guess TDS now could led to delusion MM. Just to give a realistic answer and get you out of the weeds you have been wondering in for months please consider. Steven Colbert was making 40 million dollars. Had a staff of over 100 and his boss was losing over 10 million/year. Kimmel lost his job because of the same. He was an over paid not funny late nite cross his boss had to bare while losing millions. You think they had not been looking for months on how to get out of this hole? Hell a cabel late nite {Greg Gutfield} was slaying those two sourer non funny over paid wannabes in the ratings...slaying.... and he sure don't make their money or have their resources. But he is quite witty, very funny and will make fun of anyone and everyone. In short you need to get real with these small TDS world views
Thanks, mcfarm!
I never thought that Kimmel and alot of other comedians were very funny either.
Too many dumb jokes, like the one he told that got him taken off the air.
But the 1st amendment gives them the right to tell dumb jokes. Including dumb jokes that are intended to offend one party in order to make the other party laugh.
Humor is clearly something that is different for many people. Extremely subjective!
mcfarm thinks that Greg Gutfeld on Fox is extremely funny. I would agree that he's very witty but I might have laughed at his jokes 3 times the last 10 years. It's not because his jokes are almost always related to a political attack of the left........to me, like with Kimmel they just are NOT funny. I've stated to my wife, dozens of times, how much I dislike Greg Gutfeld's unfunny, hate based, making fun of people type humor.
If
dozens of times. Jesse Watters humor does the exact same thing. SOOOO much worse than Kimmel who takes the opposite side.
But MAGA people will eat it up because his jokes are all about attacking and demeaning the left.
When I was a kid, I would laugh hard at all the 3 stooges stuff, no matter how many times I saw the same episodes.
Robin Williams live was the funniest and most entertaining humor ever.
Today, I love listening to Bill Maher on the weekends with his hall of fame, endless wit about any topic talking to anybody. I might laugh hard a dozen+ during one of his shows.
On America Has Talent, Howie Mandell is really funny too.
Other favorites were Jerry Seinfeld, George Carlin, Adam Sandler.
There are many thousands of comedians and many of them are extremely funny. Here's a list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_comedians
For stand up (off the top of my head…so, I’m going to leave some out), I loved Rodney Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, Garry Shandling, and Ellen Degeneras among others. Besides making me LOL constantly, what did they all have in common? They used little to no profanity (which unless used only sparingly I don’t normally find funny) and little (at most) blatant sex based humor (which I generally don’t find funny). I’m not talking about more subtle stuff. One exception on the profanity is George Carlin. But the jokes of his I liked the most usually weren’t so profanity laden.
I love Seinfeld, too, though I don’t think of him in a purely standup way. I never heard him use profanity and don’t recall much purely sex based stuff in his reportie.
I think Larry David/Curb Your Enthusiasm was hilarious but I’d prefer many fewer F bombs. When they’re so many it tends to take away from it. Maybe it’s because I very rarely use the word other than when I’m mad. I don’t normally use it in casual conversation.
I thought Curly Howard was a very funny man in The Three Stooges! Laurel and Hardy were great. Bob Newhart in Newhart was one of the funniest straight men I’ve ever seen. Eddie Albert in Green Acres was also funny as the straight guy. Carol O’Connor was pure genius as Archie Bunker.
Larry,
Im glad you mentioned Curly from the 3 stooges because he was the only one of them that I thought was funny.
I hear you on the profanity. Richard Pryer was funny but with too much profanity for my wife and I.
Too many dumb jokes, like the one he told that got him taken off the air jokes....repeated by MM. You ought to be ashamed.
now you have fallen in deeper with the sad sad left and their total and complete acquiescence to the wacko far left. You just repeated what is one of the sickest things said since the murder in front of thousands. It was certainly no part of a joke. A really great conservative Christian got shot in the head and is dead. His family is left with this to deal with and some dare to mention the word ""joke"
Furthermore the first amendment gives them no right to offend the affiliates of his boss,,,...his boss had every right to do what he did. This is business, If Kimnel was so damn talented and in demand he should go today to a podcast or independent of some sort and say whatever stupid things he wants but if you have a boss sorry you gave up your independence for lack of guts or courage or maybe you just knew you did not have the talent
mc said:
“A really great conservative Christian got shot in the head and is dead.”
—————-
Hey mc,
I already said that the murder was wrong and said that about political based violence in general. Also, I feel celebrating the murder is a bad thing to do despite my negative feelings about things he’s said and done.
Regardless, I’d like to know why you’re calling Kirk “really great”. What makes him that way to you? I thought he was a spreader of hatred due to being racist, sexist, homophobic, and Islamophobic. So, I don’t think he was great at all. Of course, if one is white, male, straight, and Christian, that may not matter to someone without empathy for the affected groups.
Thanks, mcfarm,
Your posts here are extremely important so that we can try to understand where your side(MAGA) is coming from.
With regards to the Kimmel joke, you are not correct in stating that it was a joke about this horrible murder. You will never believe that though.
The truth is that he made a joke ABOUT MAGA. Yes, it was a dumb joke and it was completely wrong in giving the impression that the shooter might be a MAGA type person and I personally thought it was NOT acceptable.
But I have heard Greg Gutfeld tell hundreds, maybe 1,000+ jokes about the left that were complete BS and loaded with hate that he has every right to tell to MAGA viewers. If this gets him ratings for Fox, more power to him. He's exercising his 1st Amendment right. I don't have to find him funny. It's called FREEDOM OF THE PRESS and FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
Even hate speech, unfortunately.
Since when does a president or the government get to take that away because they don't like the person or content?
2025 under the Trump administration is "since when".
I thought that the Rs were supposed to be all about the Constitution?
Mark Levin's entire philosophy is supposedly based on the Constitution.........the same documents that he, MAGA and Trump trample on constantly...........and justify for whatever self serving interest they manufacture.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution
Further information: Freedom of speech in the United States and United States free speech exceptions
The First Amendment broadly protects the rights of free speech and free press.[60] Free speech means the free and public expression of opinions without censorship, interference, or restraint by the government.[61][62][63][64] The term "freedom of speech" embedded in the First Amendment encompasses the decision what to say as well as what not to say.[65] The speech covered by the First Amendment covers many ways of expression and therefore protects what people say as well as how they express themselves.[66] Free press means the right of individuals to express themselves through publication and dissemination of information, ideas, and opinions without interference, constraint, or prosecution by the government.[67][68] In Murdock v. Pennsylvania (1943), the Supreme Court stated that "Freedom of press, freedom of speech, freedom of religion are in a preferred position."[69] The Court added that a community may not suppress, or the state tax, the dissemination of views because they are unpopular, annoying, or distasteful.[70] The Constitution protects, according to the Supreme Court in Stanley v. Georgia (1969), the right to receive information and ideas, regardless of their social worth, and to be generally free from governmental intrusions into one's privacy and control of one's thoughts.[71] As stated by the Court in Stanley: "If the First Amendment means anything, it means that a State has no business telling a man, sitting alone in his own house, what books he may read or what films he may watch. Our whole constitutional heritage rebels at the thought of giving government the power to control men's minds."[72]
Despite the common misconception that the First Amendment prohibits anyone from limiting free speech,[73] the text of the amendment prohibits only the federal government, the states, and local governments from doing so.[74][75] State constitutions provide free speech protections similar to those of the U.S. Constitution. In a few states, such as California, a state constitution has been interpreted as providing more comprehensive protections than the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has permitted states to extend such enhanced protections, most notably in Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins.[76]
The Supreme Court of the United States characterized the rights of free speech and free press as fundamental personal rights and liberties and noted that the exercise of these rights lies at the foundation of free government by free men.[77][78] The Supreme Court stated in Thornhill v. Alabama (1940) that the freedom of speech and of the press guaranteed by the United States Constitution embraces at the least the liberty to discuss publicly and truthfully all matters of public concern, without previous restraint or fear of subsequent punishment.[79] The Court noted in Bridges v. California (1941): "The ability to publicly criticize even the most prominent politicians and leaders without fear of retaliation is part of the First Amendment, because political speech is core First Amendment speech. … For it is a prized American privilege to speak one's mind, although not always with perfect good taste, on all public institutions."[80] In Bond v. Floyd (1966), a case involving the Constitutional shield around the speech of elected officials, the Supreme Court declared that the First Amendment central commitment is that, in the words of New York Times Co. v. Sullivan (1964), "debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open".[81] The Court further explained that just as erroneous statements must be protected to give freedom of expression the breathing space it needs to survive, so statements criticizing public policy and the implementation of it must be similarly protected:
But, above all else, the First Amendment means that government has no power to restrict expression because of its message, its ideas, its subject matter, or its content. ... To permit the continued building of our politics and culture, and to assure self-fulfillment for each individual, our people are guaranteed the right to express any thought, free from government censorship. The essence of this forbidden censorship is content control. Any restriction on expressive activity because of its content would completely undercut the "profound national commitment to the principle that debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open
The level of protections with respect to free speech given by the First Amendment is not limitless.[82] As stated in his concurrence in Mosley, Chief Justice Warren E. Burger said: "the First Amendment does not literally mean that we 'are guaranteed the right to express any thought, free from government censorship.'"[83]
Attached to the core rights of free speech and free press are several peripheral rights that make these core rights more secure. The peripheral rights encompass not only freedom of association, including privacy in one's associations, but also, in the words of Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), "the freedom of the entire university community", i.e., the right to distribute, the right to receive, and the right to read, as well as freedom of inquiry, freedom of thought, and freedom to teach

Larry those were some pretty negative remarks about Kirk. I would of sworn I read here that you new basically nothing about Kirk or had rarely if ever watched one his hundreds and hundreds of presentations. Is that so? I find you most of the time pretty damn fair in your comments. As I have admired Charlie for years even though he was much younger and less experienced than me, I find your comments not only unfair but untrue. Charlie was about right and wrong, good and evil but even more important what is real and what is an individuals foundation. For him he started and ended with his faith. If you could take some time and you-tube a few of those presentations and find just how thoughtful, kind and patient he is with anyone who shows up you just have to be impressed. Hey MTP,
But MM isn’t the govt. The Trump Admin. is using its power/influence (through the FCC in this case) to get Kimmel off the air because poor Trump’s gigantic ego and juvenile self can’t handle criticism. That’s not consistent with the 1st Amendment protecting US citizens against the Fed Govt trying to stifle free speech.
Not true, it was a business decision. Kimmel was losing money.
FCC regulates public airways, not so much for cable since its subscription. If kimmel said Trump has bad policies, thats freedom of speech. Kimmel linked the assignation to MAGA over public airways with no basis or proof, thats slander and the FCC can regulate that.

Jimmy Kimmel isn't a news reporter, he's a comedian. The standards are different for a journalist REPORTING THE NEWS(with an objective of informing people of authentic facts) compared to a comedian, TELLING JOKES(with an objective of making people laugh).

Journalism is the production and distribution of reports on the interaction of events, facts, ideas, and people that are the "news of the day" and that informs society to at least some degree of accuracy.
+++++++++++++++++
I would even contend that if jokes/comedy had to all be as accurate as the news from journalists, the majority of humor would not be acceptable.
Interestingly, journalists and especially conservative talk shows, like Jesse Watters and Mark Levin on Fox, completely obliterate the truth for 60 minutes AND THEY PRESENT THE INFORMATION AS THE TRUTH!
Jimmy Kimmel WAS misleading with HIS JOKE and maybe some misinformed people WANTED TO BELIEVE it was the truth but it was PRESENTED AS COMEDY. Nobody tuned into Jimmy Kimmel to get the news. They watched him to laugh at his (dumb) jokes. He was hired and paid to tell jokes in order to make people laugh, not to report the news.
Regarding that, whether he had blockbuster ratings or not should never matter. He had the right, under the 1st amendment, as a comedian, with the understanding that his material WAS COMEDY to tell dumb jokes. It's actually pretty absurd to say that he was suddenly fired, exactly after telling a joke about MAGA that was upsetting to Trump that it had nothing to do with that joke...........when the head of the FCC even told us clearly that he threatened ABC over this joke.
Sen. Rand Paul says FCC chair's comments threatening ABC over Jimmy Kimmel were 'absolutely inappropriate'
The Kentucky Republican said that FCC chair Brendan Carr had 'no business weighing in on' Jimmy Kimmel's comments.
"This is television for goodness' sakes," he said. "You have to sell sponsorships. You have to sell commercials, and if you're losing money, you can be fired. But the government's got no business in it, and the FCC was wrong to weigh in."

And the FCC also told us they are after others who don't fall in line with the MAGA agenda:
In a podcast appearance, Brendan Carr said the daytime show could be subject to the FCC’s equal time rule.

Hate speech in the United States cannot be directly regulated by the government due to the fundamental right to freedom of speech protected by the Constitution.[1] While "hate speech" is not a legal term in the United States, the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that most of what would qualify as hate speech in other western countries is legally protected speech under the First Amendment. In a Supreme Court case on the issue, Matal v. Tam (2017), the justices unanimously reaffirmed that there is no "hate speech" exception to the free speech rights protected by the First Amendment and that the U.S. government may not discriminate against speech on the basis of the speaker's viewpoint

For all you who blamed Trump for that suspension you might want to now correct the record.
Seems Disney wants the NFL and the billions that follow. That was an important part of this negotiation that was not broadcast. Sort of just like the truth was not broadcast but the left has controlled such a large percent of media for so long it all matters little. They are fading and they are throwing a hissy fit. Just like the children they are.

Trump spoke about the issue to reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday while returning from a state visit to the UK.
"I have read some place that the networks were 97% against me, again, 97% negative, and yet I won and easily [in last year's election]," the president said.
"They give me only bad publicity [and] press. I mean, they're getting a licence. I would think maybe their licence should be taken away."
The FCC's chair, Brendan Carr accused Kimmel of "the sickest conduct possible" and said firms like the Disney-owned ABC could "find ways to change conduct and take action... or there's going to be additional work for the FCC".
FCC chair Carr told Fox on Thursday: "We're going to continue to hold these broadcasters accountable to the public interest - and if broadcasters don't like that simple solution, they can turn their licence in to the FCC."
The FCC has regulatory power over major networks, such as ABC, as well as the local stations that carry their content. Owners of local stations can also influence major networks by refusing to carry shows.

The take by Fox news on Kimmel's monologue and this issue so far this evening is such a hateful, lying, completely counterproductive example of broadcasting, intended to enrage their viewers by stealing their intelligence that it's not worth repeating.

Pirro is the 23rd current or former Fox News employee Trump has recruited for his administration since taking office earlier this year. However, his relationship with the network runs far deeper and longer than just this year nominees.
During his first administration, Trump regularly called Fox News hosts live on air to have impromptu, off-the-cuff interviews. He also allegedly would consult any number of hosts off the air, including Fox News powerhouse Sean Hannity.
Trump, however, decided to elevate that special relationship in his second administration by appointing hosts, many of whom have only ever had glowing praise for Trump during their broadcasts, to key Cabinet positions and high-profile roles. Comedian and TV host Bill Maher quipped on Friday night during Real Time with Bill Maher that "I've heard of state-run TV; this is TV run state."
Here in Evansville, Indiana our ABC programming comes from Nexstar, so we were BLOCKED from watching Jimmy Kimmel last night.

RESTORING FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND ENDING FEDERAL CENSORSHIP
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and section 301 of title 3, United States Code, it is hereby ordered as follows:
Section 1. Purpose. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution, an amendment essential to the success of our Republic, enshrines the right of the American people to speak freely in the public square without Government interference. Over the last 4 years, the previous administration trampled free speech rights by censoring Americans’ speech on online platforms, often by exerting substantial coercive pressure on third parties, such as social media companies, to moderate, deplatform, or otherwise suppress speech that the Federal Government did not approve. Under the guise of combatting “misinformation,” “disinformation,” and “malinformation,” the Federal Government infringed on the constitutionally protected speech rights of American citizens across the United States in a manner that advanced the Government’s preferred narrative about significant matters of public debate. Government censorship of speech is intolerable in a free society.
Sec. 2. Policy. It is the policy of the United States to: (a) secure the right of the American people to engage in constitutionally protected speech;
(b) ensure that no Federal Government officer, employee, or agent engages in or facilitates any conduct that would unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen;
(c) ensure that no taxpayer resources are used to engage in or facilitate any conduct that would unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen; and
(d) identify and take appropriate action to correct past misconduct by the Federal Government related to censorship of protected speech.
Sec. 3. Ending Censorship of Protected Speech. (a) No Federal department, agency, entity, officer, employee, or agent may act or use any Federal resources in a manner contrary to section 2 of this order.
(b) The Attorney General, in consultation with the heads of executive departments and agencies, shall investigate the activities of the Federal Government over the last 4 years that are inconsistent with the purposes and policies of this order and prepare a report to be submitted to the President, through the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, with recommendations for appropriate remedial actions to be taken based on the findings of the report.
Sec. 4. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:
(i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or
(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.
(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.
(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

The president celebrated when Jimmy Kimmel was taken off air – and was incandescent when he returned, writes Jon Sopel. Could this be the moment that America’s cowed corporate titans learn to stand up to Donald Trump?

Agents group says the latest dismissals are part of a “dangerous pattern” of weakening the nation’s top law enforcement agency.

The dismissals are part of a long-running purge of the nation’s premier law enforcement agency since President Trump returned to the White House. Bureau veterans say high-performing agents are being fired without cause or due process.

Mother Freedom is a reference to the United States. Since the beginning of the nations history, the U.S. has fought for freedom, not only for itself, but also for other countries. The U.S. is the first supreme power that fought for democracy and freedom for its citizens, hence, we don't have a king or rulers. We live in the land of the free, and we were the first country to establish that and are helping spread that freedom to other countries.
That is the reason we are known as "Mother" Freedom, because we not only gave "birth" to it, but we are also "reproducing" it among other countries.
