Red Velvet Ants

Who has seen these ants before?


Every couple of years I see one on our property. Wow! They are one of the most beautiful insects on the planet!


The males have wings but are not that pretty.......but no stinger.


The females have no stingers and run along the ground but there sting has given them the nickname, that most know them by "cow killers".


No way they could kill a cow or a human but their sting is nasty.

I caught one and put it in a glass jar for awhile to show off to our grand kids. The older boy really like bugs. 


The ones that we have here are very bright red and the images at the link below don't do them justice. The red is a bunch of hairs that look like thick fur.
