2-27-2021 New: The previous 2 weeks of weather featured incredibly cold dry air over much of the country. Many studies show that the amount of virus surviving after 1 hour doubles when you cut the absolute humidity in half. For every drop of 20 deg. F in the dew point, you cut the absolute humidity in half. This is largely responsible for our annual Winter flu season.
With plunging dew points/extremely dry air, this promoted long survival times for COVID earlier this month and much higher transmission rates in the very dry indoor air. This may be responsible for a temporary stall in the rapidly dropping COVID rates before they drop again.

Did the dry weather start around the peak of 1-9 or did it start around 2-5? Mike you would be the person to know this.

The dry air started hitting seasonally like it always does in September as temperatures dropped.
This is always a gradual process but always happens every year as the sun gets lower in the sky and weaker.
We have a Winter flu season every year too that coincides with this and the gradually drier air is always a factor.
There are other factors of course but many studies have in the past shown flu outbreaks occurring a couple of weeks after widespread arctic air outbreaks.
Knowing this I am going to speculate on our Winter COVID season this year, dialing in other affects.
Numbers were soaring higher last fall, thru December but the number of people getting vaccinated, added to the number of people who have tested positive for COVID we’re getting pretty high too.
Not to be ignored is the fact that many, many people have been exposed to COVID and even had COVID but were asymptomatic and were never tested.
Some think it’s more than several times the positive tests.
If you look at what happened so suddenly in early January, it sure looks like we acquired enough herd immunity from the combo of rapid vaccinations and people that had COVID.....to peak!
Like somebody flipped a switch, COVID numbers plunged straight down for 6 straight weeks, without a pause. A drop of 70% in a short period of time. Early in that period, new President Biden was telling us COVID was going higher and there was nothing we could do to stop it. Other so called experts were ignoring the clear top, weeks after it happened. Still telling us to wear the almost worthless cloth masks....even today......which had ZERO to do with the peak. We’ve had a cloth mask mandate here since early July and they did nothing.
So it appears that increasing herd immunity started paying dividends around 7 weeks ago with weather conditions also less favorable for COVID survival, being extremely mild across much of the country during January.
But the weather turned sharply colder in early February and that much drier air is more favorable for COVID survival times and transmission.
This usually takes a couple of weeks to show up in Data that measures virus numbers.
If herd immunity has been putting strong downward pressure on transmission, the more favorable very dry weather may only be able to stall the drop or cause just a temporary small increase for a few weeks or so.

Would some body please explain to me how herd immunity is possible by use of vaccination
That seems like some hyped up mumbo jumbo to confuse or give comfort to a population
If herd immunity is the objective, then people getting sick and surviving, while infecting others who survive, will give you herd immunity .Eventually most people have been infected and survived which then means most people have immunity
Vaccination on the other hand gives your body immunity but does nothing for other people. You still wear a mask, social distance and others avoid the disease
Thus herd immunity by means of vaccination is false, hyped up hope for the people. Doesn't mean vaccination is good because it is but herd immunity???. Herd immunity means the disease has been passed from person to person until most have been infected and survived
Please don't talk about herd immunity and vaccination as the reason when we know 30-40 % will not allow vaccination. Those people who did not get vaccinated can become infected unless they got infected by some means. Vaccination does not protect the 30-40 % who did not get sick
Herd immunity is a term used much too often and confuses people into thinking they are safe due to herd immunity. Vaccination does not give everybody herd immunity

Immunizing people tricks their bodies into thinking they were invaded by the virus. They produce the same antibodies to protect them as the bodies of those that actually got COVID.........or the disease.
metmike: Various experts disagree on what % of the population must be vaccinated and have been sick with COVID to get "herd immunity" but this is where people are the most confused. Some say we might need 95% others 80%, others even less.
Herd immunity is not like flipping a switch. It's not like, at 89% covered, COVID will still be spreading and suddenly, at 90% people covered....it will stop spreading.
The more people covered, the less opportunity the virus has at spreading and the lower the new case numbers will go and the more herd immunity is imparted on that population.
We are nowhere close to having enough vaccinated and COVID sick people to wipe the virus out but we clearly have had enough of those, in addition to the many that got COVID and were asymptomatic or never got tested so that we peaked 2 months ago. It doesn't take 90% or even 50%, this happens at recorded numbers less than that. Look at the the data graphs in this thread.......they don't lie..........it's the people telling us stuff about COVID that do that.

Let's take a hypothetical situation and 100% of the people in a population were vaccinated. Do you not see how this would prevent people in that population from getting infected and spreading the virus to others?
It doesn't take a full 100% of people getting vaccinated to accomplish effected herd immunity. Something much less than that will do it. For every X% you increase those vaccinated and that have had the disease, the more herd immunity that population has.
