kannbwx, seems you crossed the state the very last day much of central Indiana got its last rain fall....32 days now....add that to the heat and your drive will look very different today. But you are right about the SW. They got rain again last nite and pretty much the entire season.
6 stops in SW Minn (Nobles, Murray, Cottonwood Co). Average #corn yield 210.9 bu/acre. Last year's tour was 203.2 in this district and the 3yr avg is 174.9. Soils are dry but the crops are looking pretty good. Looks like the area caught timely rain this year. #pftour21

Here's the Iowa tour yields for corn by district in 2016 versus 2021. Iowa had a record corn yield of 203 bu/acre in 2016. However, 367 samples were pulled that year versus 481 this year. Not sure if that's a factor. The 2018 tour also found the state at 188.2.
Don't forget, last year was impacted by the derecho and by drought. The central strip of Iowa, where the derecho impacts were greatest, saw much higher measurements this year.
seems there is just no substitute for deep dark top soil. Earlier this season many growers had given up all hope it was so dry....and now we are finding very good yields all with later rains. If only we were all so fortunate
which was 174.6 bpa and 14.75 billion bu
