metmike: Geeesh!!! I've been insisting on this since 2020. We could have saved over 100,000 lives if people wore N95 masks instead of the not very effective cloth masks.
There have been plenty of them available for everybody the past year. My guess is that part of the reason to not recommend them earlier is that they would have to admit that they've been wrong about the cloth masks by finally telling us the truth about the N95 masks.
This wasn't rocket science.

metmike: 10's of thousands of lives would have been saved.......possibly over 100,000 if everybody was instructed to wear N95 masks over a year ago.
The administration is struggling to clearly communicate what type of masks people should be wearing amid a surge of omicron cases.
metmike: Better late than never...............ahhh, actually, that's not so for the hundreds of thousands that died thinking a cloth mask would protect them.
And it's not as if it wasn't totally obvious back in 2020!

metmike: The saddest thing of all is that the Omicron is 91% LESS deadly and NOW they are finally telling us to wear N95 masks to protect us from Omicron.
Delta is what killed almost everybody in 2021, most using cloth masks and most not vaccinated. It was their bad judgment that caused most of the fatalities to not get vaccinated despite experts trying to get them vaccinated but it was really, really bad advice by experts telling people that died that cloth masks would protect them and to not wear N95 masks.
Back in 2020, when we didn't have vaccinations, that make us 12 times less likely to die, they actually told us to NOT get N95 masks. Even after health care workers were vaccinated, they told us to NOT get N95 masks and to only use cloth masks.......and made us think that cloth masks are effective. They even suggested 2 cloth masks on top of each other....instead of N95 masks that work.

metmike: I totally get that early in the pandemic, we did not understand alot of things, including things about mask wearing. So we can excuse the positions of the authorities above of giving bad advice above in March of 2020(even if I knew then to only wear an N95 mask and that cloth masks were not very effective).
However, they continued to tell people to NOT wear N95 masks the entire year of 2020, looooong after it should have been blatantly obvious to medical experts giving advice that the N95 masks are really the ONLY masks that are effective.
Then they continued to say that thru almost the entire year, 2021!!
Many tens to possibly hundreds of thousands of people died in 2020/21 that contracted COVID WHILE WEARING A CLOTH MASK!!!!!
Only a tiny fraction, that we can never measure accurately, contracted COVID while wearing an N95 mask.
We could have beat this thing from just very strict N95 mask wearing from the get go........or at least started when we had massive amounts of N95 masks available in late 2020!! I know that some people would have still rebelled against N95 masks but at least they would have been told the truth and had the facts/science, so that their deaths were their own faults for making stupid, anti science choices.
However, in this case of the government telling people to NOT wear N95 masks for almost 2 years, it's the government that was totally negligent for more than a year of that........well after the N95 masks were plentiful and longer after it was crystal clear that N95 masks were 20 times better than cloth masks at protecting people.

Here are some government experts below on CNN in early 2021 telling us why the CDC was still NOT recommending people wear N95 masks. The biggest justification then, with tons of N95 masks available is that N95 masks are too uncomfortable and people won't wear any mask if they are told to wear an uncomfortable N95 mask.

metmike: WTF man. The policy/advise was to recommend wearing a mask that doesn't work well and caused an extra 100,000+ people to die because it was comfortable....... instead of recommending wearing an uncomfortable N95 mask that would have saved 100,000+ lives???
What the heck is this..........mask fashion and design trying to sell comfortable, good looking wearing apparel and screw the science?
I'm sure the 100,000+ dead people were thrilled that they got to spend their last few weeks in this life in mask comfort and style......but then, if you are so concerned about comfort as your top priority.........why even wear a mask that hardly works at all? Yeah, that's exactly what people did because they knew cloth masks are bs.
They just didn't get the fact that many people refused to wear cloth masks because they were smart enough to know that they didn't help much.
If you told the truth and sold them science that people believed in.........the 95 in N95 is for the scientifically tested filtering out of 95%+ of the viruses like the COVID virus.....THAT COULD KILL THEM!
The cloth masks are like.................N5 masks.......letting 95% of the COVID IN that did kill hundreds of thousands, even cloth mask wearing people.
Then people would be motivated to wear the masks that actually work to save their lives.
Here in January 2022, they finally figured it out. So the government told everybody to NOT wear N95 masks for almost 2 years.............and now, everybody will get a free mask from the government later this year and are being encourage to wear that one.
But by then, Omicron, being as contagious as it is will already have affected most people and we will have acquired herd immunity.
So the N95 masks being issued this late in the pandemic, arriving AFTER the pandemic is over is like the fire department arriving after the house was burned down.
The sad thing in this analogy is that the fire department was located just a mile away and had been called hours earlier, immediately after the fire started and they could have saved 95% of the building but they waited to respond because it was more "convenient" to go later in the day.
Whether you are fighting fires or wearing masks the main objective isn't "convenience" or "comfort" it's to SAVE LIVES!
Especially if your job, working for the government is to SAVE LIVES in a pandemic.
guess the good old government has ordered 400 million n-95's. Now comes the latest test which proclaims the much more expensive n-95 must be changed at regular intervals or by the second day has lost much of its effectiveness, Not to mention these masks are so uncomfortable that in itself has reduced the usage. some say after a 12 hour shirt with one of these on is like slow water torture. Hot, does not fit, cuts into your face etc.

During the last year, I have purchased and used several brands of KN95 and N95 masks
The one I am using now fits much tighter around the nose than any of the others. It creates a total seal. It also makes the breathing just a little bit more difficult… not good for jogging, but it makes me feel safer..
