I love standard time!

Larry might be the only other one that understands this.

The weather models all come out in Z time or Zulu time, which is Greeniwch Mean Time (GMT).

That stays constant year round. So when we have Daylight Savings Time and jump ahead an hour, all the weather stuff comes out 1 hour later compared to  local times.

When the clocks go back to standard time, all the weather stuff comes out 1 hour earlier.

Why is this a big deal?

An example is that I don't have to stay up until 2:30 am CDT to see the European Ensemble model. It's mostly out by 1:30 am CST now.

If you follow a meteorologist on social media, odds are they've talked about "Z" time. Here's how to find out what time they mean in your neighborhood.

We mentioned GMT on the previous page.

Note on the map below that the EST zone is -5. This is 5 hours BEHIND GMT.

Right now, it's 6am GMT and 1am EST or Midnight CST.

Weather models coming out here at 1am EST, didn't come out until 2am EDT a week ago.

The world time zone map indicates the standard time zones actually observed. In theory time zones are based on the division of the world into twenty four time zones of 15 degrees longitude each. The time convention begins with Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) which is also commonly referred to as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) being located at the Greenwich meridian. This line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali and Ghana in Africa. The Greenwich meridian time zone is 7 1/2 degrees east and 7 1/2 degrees west of zero degrees longitude. Time zones to the east of the Greenwich meridian are later and time zones to the west of the Greenwich meridian are earlier.

Mike, I also love ST for the same reason. Also, I like the transition. I hope we still have it next autumn!
