That is a science, critical thinking based assessment!

Imaginations and conspiracy theories that dominate views in this field don't have to follow physical laws. 

 The chance that an advanced civilization traveled billions of years to observe us unseen is absurd. They didn't invent or use a physical law that we don't know about that exists on their planet because they would be limited by the physical laws in our galaxy. 

The amount of energy required, the technology required, the life span(billions of years) of that life, the fact that there have been scientists searching the Cosmos for decades, using the most sophisticated devices that have found nothing.

And people want to believe that they are so sophisticated that they have defeated all of that and are right amongst us, secretly and invisibly observing us is beyond what makes sense. It's a trillion times more likely to be surveillance drones from China or atmospheric phenomena. 

However, maybe the biggest reason that peoples minds are wide open to the interpretation that defies physics/science and critical thinking is that most people belong to a religion. Different people believe different things about "their" God. 

This is not to knock religion, I went to Catholic School for 12 years and taught religious ed classes at our church for over a decade.  I learned about and taught classes on other religions. 

However, the belief systems of most religions which people are indoctrinated into as children(that stick in their brains for their entire lives)  require the faith in things about their God's that are crazier than the belief that these UFO's are advanced aliens from a distant world secretly observing us while being undetected. 

Our God's don't even need a technology to see everything, everywhere, all of us, all the time and their age is older than the oldest thing in the entire Universe. 

With that being the pillar of many faiths, it makes believing that the source of these UFO's are tapping into the same mysterious world that everything we understand cannot explain, an easy thing to accept. 

I'm not here to challenge religious beliefs but instead, to explain why it's so easy for people to believe some crazy things about UFO's.
