Longtime Yankees play by play guy, John Sterling has passed at age 87. :(

He was before that a broadcaster in Atlanta 1982-7. I’ll never forget not just the game, itself, but also John’s great calls of the amazing 19 inning multiple rain delay Davey Johnson being ejected nearly 4AM (still is latest on record) 4th of July fireworks waking up and scaring ending Mets at Braves Rick Camp 2 outs 0-2 count 18th inning only ever home run game of July 4-5, 1985, which I luckily watched on TV live:

  • Context: During a July 4th-5th, 1985, marathon game, the Braves had exhausted their position players, forcing pitcher Rick Camp to bat in the bottom of the 18th.
  • The Moment: With two outs and an 0-2 count, Camp hit a solo home run to tie the game at 11-11.
  • The Call: John Sterling, then a Braves announcer, famously exclaimed on air, "If he hits a home run to tie this game, this game will be certified as absolutely the nuttiest in the history of baseball".

Video of John’s call (short/<3 minutes): I promise that you won’t regret watching it!
