The deadlocked jury ended its sixth day of deliberations without a verdict after an exasperated defense claimed there is 'one juror who refuses to listen to the law.'

I wasn't going to start a thread on this because of spending hours posting other stuff and my personal experience related to this.
Our Mother(who loved us dearly) had a father that died shortly after she was born. Her mother died slowly from cancer when she was just barely a teenager. Then she was raised by 2 older brothers that were not capable of being parents.
This horrific/painful childhood that featured the absence of parental love in her teen years SEVERELY scarred her psychologically (in fact it was incapacitating much of the time) with severe mental illness for decades.
Luckily she ended up married to a man (our father) that was blessed with gifts of tolerance, devotion/commitment that exceeded what I would have thought was possible.........except by witnessing it every day growing up.
This gave me a good understanding of what severe mental illness can do to somebody(I could tell you hundreds of stories including countless suicide attempts, some ending with the ambulance taking mom away in the middle of the night to pump her stomach and treat her).
We judge people with mental illness by unfair standards because we can't see it or understand it. Like expecting a person with a broken leg and broken arm to do hard physical labor.
I forgave mom completely for all the abuse she dished out, especially to me as the oldest child when I was 19 years old and spent the rest of her life(4 more decades) nurturing a wonderful relationship that helped to heal her.
I couldn't have done that if not taught by the master.....our dad!

And here's the thing. If we had been raised(5 brothers and sisters) by 2 picture perfect parents, I would likely judge this lady completely differently from not understanding severe mental illness.
Mom loved us every bit as much as Dad and showed it at times but the intense trauma of her childhood created mental illness that she could not overcome but in her last 2 decades, finally put behind her. Replacing all the horrible memories with good memories thanks to our Dad and her children.
It took several decades but she was pretty happy her last 20 years........and I helped. Her youngest brother, Uncle Joe also played a key role.
The bottom line is that nobody would ever want to be like this. Nobody would intentionally put themselves and those around them thru unimaginable pain. Even when they are crying out for attention, there is an incredibly pathological psychological condition that is challenging to impossible to manage. Mom went to 4 different psychiatrists, with different treatments and meds, none that did much good. This was the 1960's/70's before psychiatric science learned alot.
Even today, there are still countless people like this lady where the treatments failed miserably. It's not like a broken leg or broken arm. You take X-rays, set the bone and let the body heal itself.
Or most diseases that have effective treatments.
We can measure almost everything going on in our bodies with blood tests for thousands of things.
But we still don't have a test to determine the accurate level of neurotransmitters in our brains(brain chemistry). Treating an imbalance in brain chemistry is often trial and error.
And memories etched in that brain that can't be erased as well as other, non physical things going on that determine a person's emotions that can't be just turned off.
We don't know everything that the jury knows but it would have been a no brainer for me to find this lady not guilty because of her mental illness. However, during the juror selection process, I guarantee you that the prosecutor would have throw me out quickly after finding out my background and asking questions.
They always want people that weren't impacted by experiences in their lives which would create a bias in judging the defendant. Same thing with the other side. The defense would object to somebody like me, if I hated Mom for abusing me instead of loving her as an adult that forgave and empathized with her condition.
