Old record 87 in 1989.

Tomorrows record of 91 could also be challenged!
Bone dry soils in a flash drought and low dew points are allowing the solar radiation to be converted into heat above the ground efficiently compared to wet soils, that feature some of the heat going into evaporation and wetter air has a higher heat capacity.

These maps sometimes take a day to catch up to incorporate the latest data(the bottom map is only updated once a week).

DROUGHT MONITOR

Released October 6, 2026

The remnants of Isaias gave us less than .2" of rain:

With that dry air, the Heat Index is actually LOWER than the actual temperature! Good for humans outside, bad for vegetation and soils.
At least the low sun angle is not baking the ground like it does with the high sun angle in Summer.
The sun angle right now is the same as the sun angle on the last day of February(with the lingering, stored heat from the Summer still keeping things warm).

Hopefully, the next system that will hang around for a few days will bring an inch of rain(if we get real lucky).
