1676 – The Danish astronomer Ole Rømer presents the first quantitative measurements of the speed of light.

1964   – Second Vatican Council: The third session of the Roman Catholic Church's ecumenical council closes.

1980 – A deadly fire breaks out at the MGM Grand Hotel in Paradise, Nevada (now Bally's Las Vegas). Eighty-seven people are killed and more than 650 are injured in the worst disaster in Nevada history.

Not the one you had in mind, Mike, but this one was a little personal.

We were on vacation at our time-share and had a view good enough to take some pictures (misplaced).  Put a dampener on the city, but things got back to normal pretty quickly.

You had some noteworthy things happen on your vacations.

I remember the story about the future big celebrities that you were entertained by on your honeymoon when you just wandered into a place in the 1950's.
