1952 – The concept of the integrated circuit, the basis for all modern computers, is first published by Geoffrey Dummer.

"The integration of large numbers of tiny transistors into a small chip results in circuits that are orders of magnitude smaller, faster, and less expensive than those constructed of discrete electronic components."

Boring, boring. Designing circuit boards with resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc. was so much more challenging and fun to do. 

In the late 60's we were still doing component boards, and I did several for Jet Propulsion Labs as part of a Mars fly-by for NASA.
