Interesting.  They have potential to do lots of damage.  Armyworm problems not common here in wc ohio.  However a few years ago i did see them attack a field of wheat that was heading.  Man they stripped those plant from one end of the field to the other in a very short time.

Native to North America, the armyworm can be found east of the Rocky   Mountains, reaching northward into southern Canada. Armyworms get their   name from their behavior of moving across fields in an army-like   fashion. As larvae consume available food sources, they migrate as an   army to new host plants. Though they feed primarily on grasses (oats,   wheat, fall rye, corn, barley, and forage grasses), they can be a pest   of some vegetables (bean, cabbage, carrot, onion, pea, pepper, radish   and sweet potato). There are usually two to three generations each year   in Illinois.

China finds armyworms in 18 provinces, recommends pesticides for emergency use

2 Min Read

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has recommended the use of pesticides to fight against fall armyworms, as the destructive pest spreads across its vast farmlands, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.

Fall armyworms have now spread to 18 of China’s provinces, regions and municipalities since it was first detected in the southwestern province of Yunnan in early January, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural affairs said in a statement published on its website.

The fall armyworm “severely threatens the agriculture and grain production security of China,” the ministry said.
