I am reading a book about Vietnam

Strangely enough I came across a passage in which one of the South Vietnamese people were being caught up in the fight between Marines and the VC

The villagers did not want to fight

They wanted to farm the land

But the war made it impossible for the men to stay in the village. The VC made them join and fight

The people soon came to accept that war would be with them as the rain, the sun and all things came and went  The fighting continued because that is the way it is and nobody will change it for the people who don't want to fight. So what can one person do??

It is what it is and will always be that way. At least that is what the farmers who did not want to fight had it figured out

Reminds me of Gerry Mandering voting districts [SP]

It is what it is and will not chaange

Silly but will continue

In our country we draw strainght lines between voting districts. We change acccordig to population but still keep straight lines

Makes me think that once a system has been accepted, no matter how silly it may be, it will never change

Only war or revolution has changed much of anything down through 1000's of yrs

The exception being the new discoveries of technology which has been happening since man 1st walked the earth

Just a tidbit I found interesting

The one thing that may happen in America, with no war or revolution, is socialism, depending on how people vote and for who

I give it a 50/50 chance, which could cause  inflation happening before it all implodes. I think it depends on how many think of the ramifications vs. instant gratification, with the promise of good things in their life.

AOC promised good things would happen and she won her election. Now most Dems want to copy some part of her platform. If only the people could see what is happening in Illinios, and other problem cities and states they might stop and think.

But of course the promises, of a better life, always look really good.

Yeah,  People vote their way into socialism cuz it sounds so swell. The revolution doesn't come until they want to get out of socialism.

If unfettered capitalism was doing the job folks claim it does why would anyone want anything else ? Why are folks upset ?

The capitalistic system in the US is how old ? Looks to me it should be a paradise  by now.

Oh, yeah, I forget, haven’t had true capitalism since  the New Deal. Why did we need the New Deal again ?

Looks to me fixes should be proposed. Don’t hear capitalists suggesting many.  You say it’s good the way it is ? And folks are still unhappy ?

Socialists ignore the side of man that is the spirit. They can provide you shelter, fill your belly with bacon and beans, treat you when you're ill, all the things guaranteed to a prisoner or a slave. They don't understand that we also dream.

Who said it's good the way it is? Certainly not me.

Yeap. we need some fixes.  For example,  we should get back to free market capitalism,  not the crony capitalism we have today where the government plays a major role in choosing winners and losers.

BTW,  there will always be unhappy people.  No system can take care of  everyone.  You want everyone, with the exception of the ruling class, to share the same level of misery? Go with socialism.  With capitalism, every able bodied person has a fair shot of taking care of themselves. And the bonus?  A successful economy leaves plenty left over for those who can't care for themselves.

I would question the suggestion that capitalism leaves plenty left over for those who can't take care of them selves

Don't get me wrong I don't want complete socalism

There are a lot of things a central gov't has to do, such as infrastructure etc that individuals can't do

In  Canada we love our health care system even though it uses a large part of the Federal and local funds. We would gladly pay and extra nickel for pump gas and keep our health care system funded

However, most capitalist gov't I can think of do not have a balanced budget very often

The USA deficit is a trillion/yr.

That trillion is printed from thin air. Will the world continue to have faith in the USD. So far yes, but what if the deficit grows due to larger social benefits required or anything needing extra funds. Does the gov't raise taxes, or lower social benefits or???, and take their chances at the next election. One way or another, I have an idea their will be an end time, which may not be so good. But so far the USD continues to be strong

On the other hand, when funding/deficits becomes a problem that is when people would vote for socialism which would be worse, IMHO

There are functions that the government needs to perform.  Infrastructure is on that list.  Contrary to what appears to be a popular belief,  that is not socialism. Anymore than is law enforcement and national defense.

IMO, health care is not one of those functions and deficit spending is an entirely different debate.
