"Smithfield Foods announced Sunday that its massive pork processing plant in Sioux Falls, S.D., will close indefinitely amid a coronavirus outbreak.

As of Saturday, more than 230 employees had tested positive for COVID-19, out of a workforce of about 3,700 people — part of a growing coronavirus hotspot in Sioux Falls. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken on Saturday asked the company to close down the plant for two weeks."

TenHaken said COVID-19 infection rates are on the rise in the city of nearly 182,000 people.

“Our per capita data — we have 182.25 cases per 100,000 residents. That is more than Seattle. That’s more than Chicago. That’s concerning,” TenHaken said.

could get real interesting as most kill plants are in the Midwest an area for obvious reasons that has been slow to see the virus, but also the area of the country that has for the most part not partaken in the shelter in place mode of operation.

could be a major market mover and a major humanity concern.

I agree!

I've not traded the meats for 2 decades and only follow closely at certain times.

This looks like a good time to follow(maybe not trade) as things could get crazy. (crazier).

Appreciate you starting this post because I was unaware of it.

it truly could get crazy -- sort of a double edged sword :  One one side there will be no Chain capacity for the producers Product ( the live Hogs ) and prices plummet on the other side of the sword you have a consumer who gets a little panicky and runs on the food shelf leaving a lot of the country without a meat case. just to think a few days ago Pork bellies were said to have been headed to the rendering plant for use in dog food.

as you say crazy world.

This is a screen grab from Eikon showing U.S. daily slaughter of #cattle and #hogs for the past month.... the recent drop-off can easily be seen.
