83 tons of fake gold bars have been exposed in china. The scam involved insurance companies and banks.

It may not be a big thing, world-wide. On the other hand, it may make investors think twice before buying gold bars for a rainy day.

this type of topic has come and gone a few times over the last 20 years.  but this does seem to be larger than before. 

if you want to buy precious metals,  i'd get a rare certified gold coin from a reputable coin shop.  the grading services have been diligent in finding frauds when they do grading.  

or you can buy gold coins from the u.s. mint.  but i have had a couple problems dealing with the mint.
