Conservatives’ susceptibility to political misperceptions

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abf1234

DISCUSSION

This study provides the most rigorous evidence to date that U.S. conservatives are uniquely susceptible to political misperceptions in the current sociopolitical environment. Data were collected over 6 months in 2019 and reflect Americans’ beliefs about hundreds of political topics. The topics were selected on the basis of social media engagement, suggesting that these are the very issues that Americans were most likely to encounter online. Analyses suggest that conservatism is associated with a lesser ability to distinguish between true and false claims across a wide range of political issues and with a tendency to believe that all claims are true.

The study also shows that conservatives’ propensity to hold misperceptions is partly explained by the political implications of this widely shared news. Socially engaging truthful claims tended to favor the left, while engaging falsehoods disproportionately favored the right.

"Collectively, these results underscore the importance of policies designed to ensure that news shared in the political information environment is reliable and factually accurate. Conservatives’ consistently poor performance in distinguishing truths from falsehoods appears to be largely explained by the fact that widely shared falsehoods were systematically more supportive of conservatives’ political positions. This suggests that reducing the flow of conservative-favorable misinformation and/or promoting the flow of conservative-favorable accurate information could substantially reduce the gap in belief accuracy across the ideological spectrum. This is a difficult task, creating competing risks of censorship—if conservative claims are unfairly suppressed—and of false equivalence—if trivial but factually accurate claims are elevated in order to ensure that both sides are represented in news coverage (37). Political leaders, policymakers, and technology companies each have roles to play. Furthermore, conservative political elites have a powerful role in shaping the political information environment, and a good faith effort to promote honest discourse could be an effective strategy for improving Americans’ belief accuracy. Policymakers must provide more guidance about how to guard against misinformation in ways that are sensitive to the risks identified here, and technology companies must develop and enact policies and technologies that allow them to identify and slow the spread of misinformation."

metmike: This was BEFORE the Big lie about Biden stealing the election and BEFORE all the DISinformation about COVID and COVID vaccines.

Imagine if it had been AFTER.

Who shares the most fake news? New study sheds light

https://www.colorado.edu/today/2020/06/17/who-shares-most-fake-news-new-study-sheds-light

The bad news: 1,152 pieces of fake news were shared via Facebook, with a single user responsible for 171. On Twitter, 128 pieces of countermedia were shared.

“We found that Facebook is the central conduit for the transfer of fake news,” said Hopp.

In the Facebook sample, those self-identified as extremely conservative—7 on a scale of 1 to 7—accounted for the most fake news shared, at 26%. In the Twitter sample, 32% of fake news shares came from those who scored a 7.

But those who scored a 1, identifying as extremely liberal, also shared fake news frequently, accounting for 17.5% of shares on Facebook and 16.4% on Twitter.

Fake news at the fringes

In all, about one-fifth of users at the far ideological extremes were responsible for sharing nearly half of the fake news on the two platforms.

“It is not just Republicans or just Democrats, but rather, people who are—left or right—more ideologically extreme,” said Hopp.

Those in the ideological middle and those with high levels of media and social trust were—generally speaking—the least likely to share fake news.

“People with high levels of social trust are more likely to compile online social networks comprised of diverse individuals, and this can hamper the spread of fake news,” said Hopp, noting that when a fellow user calls out a post as inaccurate, others may be less likely to share it. “If someone posts something that is incorrect, false or misleading, I don’t think it hurts for individual users to provide a factual rebuttal.”

Again,

Take the intent of the message into consideration because, whether you like it or not.........it's based mostly on authentic facts.

You can open your minds and let the facts in or reject the truth because you don't like it and go back to relying on sources stealing your intelligence.

One of the most important rights that we all have is the right to know the objective truth..........which gives us the opportunities to use it in making smart decisions for us, our families and our country.

First thought is the data are bogus.

Conservatives and liberals on line claiming this and that and also that "Im a liberal" or " im a conservative" and self proclaiming such. Is there actually a representative sampling taken from the two groups or just a sample from those who volunteered some of their public or non -publically accessible conversations? Dunno about this one.

This research deserves a closer look in my opinion.

that is very interesting. seems every major media outlet tried to convince America that Trump's bogus collusion investigation was going to be done fairly, without bias and he was to convicted. And on top of that if you dared not believe every word of the infamous charade you were a fool, spreading misinformation and should be exiled. Wonder how that all factored into these stats The R's not believing the lies and the media covering for Hillary, the Bidens, and libs in general and to this day few if any have taken responsibility for the disaster the drug this country thru....and then turned around and did it again with impeachment number 2. Just really hard to see why R's would be skeptical of most everything from DC or the media.........ha. So what I'm saying is seems we have the R's not believing, being skeptical for good reason and the D's reading the news headlines, nodding their little heads and going right with the flow like little sheep. Now who is suffering "misconceptions?

Opinions vary but this objective scientist......lives in the real world the past year and this below is MY/OUR WORLD at MarketForum. Tell me what there is about it that really did not happen in 2021!

It's all documented/recorded and really did happen. Here are just a few small samples that represent the reality.

Misperseptions seemed pretty evenly distributed from both sides............until 2021. Then, the republican party totally owned the franchise on conpiracy theories, MISinformation misperceptions and totally being delusional.

So my question to the republicans believing in and perpetrating this MISinformation and conspiracy theory stuff here almost every week of 2021 and on most days until the end of the year is............

Can you identify 1 conspiracy theory or piece of MISinformation that somebody from the left/liberal side posted here because they wanted others here to believe in it?

Can you name any conpricy theories or MISinformation  that from the left anywhere in 2021 that came close to matching The Big Lie about Biden stealing the election or the COVID, anti COVID vaxx MISinformation campaign?

And what happens when I point out to Wayne that Zero Hedge is a source of this kind of information to make suggestions to help him out?

He goes into a rage, calling me pathetic, accusing me of having a problem and starting a bunch of threads/posts with Zero Hedge in the headline, telling us how great they are..........total denial and in fact, intentionally trying to go out of his way to oppose, like many of you have done since Trump lost of defeating  the objectives here of providing reliable information/sources, promoting good values, honesty, authentic science, cooperation,  learning and helping other human beings/love and discouraging DISinformation, conspiracy theories, intolerance of others, hate, discrimination, group think and tribalism based on political divisiveness.

John has definatly been on board with this and cutworm at times but can anybody give me good examples, since Trump lost of republicans here encouraging (or showing) the traits above to offset the reality of those many hundreds of posts  doing the 100% polar opposite?

I'm not stating this to demean you or to battle over it.

You can argue about it all you want..........but the facts are there from 2021, have been proven and this is just an analysis of THE FACTS.

The entire objective is to hope you can acknowledge the reality and choose something much more fulfilling in your lives.

I sincerely mean that. I've learned more the past 4 years here than the past 20 years and am just trying to share it.

All you need to do is open your minds and hearts and you'll find that this way is so much better than the sites you go to that profess hate, intolerance, divisiveness, conspiracy theories/DISinformation.

It appears that NONE of them, that I see ever proclaim messages that contribute positively towards being better human beings in the sense of our lives being connected and having the potential to share so many things in common.

An article that states conservatives are susceptable to political "misperceptions" while ignoring liberals is obviously not objective and  cherry picking data.

I don't have time to list the economic, hitorical, constitutional and political misperceptiuons at the core of the left/liberal ideology. Do I even need to?

And as I ponted out, the very same source claims no bias in the media.   More objective science MM?

You delude yourselves with denial posts to defect the rock solid truth to spin it...........like in 100% of every political discussion here..........so that there will never be any accountability for the actual  belief system, posts and behavior.

And the above is just a sample of 2021.

This is what makes it a pure cult like thinking and its being programmed into your brains by far right sources.

Probability of that? 100%.........just look at Gunters hundreds of links above. Alex Jones, Fox News, Zero Hedge, The Last Refuge.........yeah I go there to see what they have and watch a great deal of Fox. I get my opinion on this from 0% input from the MSM that you blame. I'm an objective, indepentant scientist trying to make the world a better, more honest and educated place.

But it really doesn't have to be that way for you guys.

You've been getting much, much better information designed to do the complete opposite that your far right DISinformation/conspiracy theory sites control your thinking with. Over the course of the last couple of years, generating the threads below and thinking sincerely about the message of  each post/statement post.........contemplating it........has really changed me and my ability to discern values and truths.  I was doing it for you guys but it ended up helping me.

I was doing the fact checking on all your DISinformation in 2021 to help you..........but it ended up educating/enlightening me! That's often how it works, you know. When you are doing things to help other people.........YOU are often the one that receives the most benefits.

Wayne,

I want to thank you for jolting me into a true objective moderator mode this past week.

After I showed you the factual truth about Zero Hedge, you going into your tirades, calling me pathetic in a couple of threads, then starting all your threads with Zero Hedge, and posting how great they are............was the wake up call needed.

Like with Gunter, I'd been seeing you as good friends and trying to help you and thinking that you would eventually receive the help and messages.

After Wayne's response, I looked at my failure to assist/help you guys......and realized that I'VE BEEN ENABLING YOU not helping you and the complete success of the far right DISinformation/conspiracy sources to have control of you and your posting here.

Wayne,

Trying to turn this place into a far right echo chamber and appealing to your far right vast majority pals.........like Gunter always did........will not work anymore. You gave me the wake up call that I needed Wayne. Thanks very much!

I already responded to you on this topic but I see now that not only are you not accepting it.........you are actually manufacturing the illusion that your wife thinks that I'm a stalker because I suggested that you consider taking off the month of February to cool off before you say some things that you might regret because of advise sincerely meant to help you Wayne.

And you ignored it and are doing exactly what I was trying to prevent you from doing.

https://www.marketforum.com/forum/topic/81238/#81290

Wayne,

Don't you think that its very odd, that if your wife thinks that I'm a stalker, that you are going to the home of the stalker and trying to convince other people he's a bad man and sabotage his efforts to do this?

https://www.marketforum.com/forum/topic/77019/

https://www.marketforum.com/forum/topic/77011/

Wayne,

I will repeat my advise again...........only with more gusto this time.  Posting here out of vengeance against the moderator (calling him pathetic is some posts) is going to cause you to say even more things that, if they continue will result in me taking actions.

You can cease doing this.........consider taking a month away to cool off. Stop cold turkey on your own or I will stop it for your own good.

This is now a formal warning Wayne. Don't let your wife read it or she might want you to call the cops on me(-:

Seriously, you have a long history of making wonderful posts which I will always be grateful for and I'm taking that into consideration and that your infection has returned and maybe its affecting your thinking right now...and appreciate the wake up call your recent posting has given me which inspired this current thread.

I'm sorry that your behavior here was exposed for your wife to read about and you were embarrassed(who obviously doesn't come here) but how could I know it was her computer and she was reading it? That  doesn't change the message 1 iota!

Now you hold the proverbial sword over my head unless I follow your demands

Well: as the Canadian truck convoy proved

Canadians mostly go along to get along

But some times the over reach is too much

You and only you have the power to use the sword

I don't think I have been unreasonable

It just so happens you don't like my choice of reading material [Zero Hedge] and thus threaten me with the sword [all in the name of helping me]

I might add this nugget of wisdom we learned down on the farm

You want to help me???

I am a Canadian and will not bow to your sword
