lots of people have been predicting food shortages for the coming year.  but if this were true, i would think that grain prices would already be surging to new highs.

i asked a local farmer friend how much he is effected by fertilizer shortages.  i would think a person could spread manure as an alternative.  his response is that spreading manure is more costly and time consuming.  so even if the price of fertilizer has risen dramatically,  fertilizer from NG is still cheaper than the alternative.

and people across america, from kansas to new york could always grow a garden.   think of how much time and gas is wasted mowing all that grass.

Some profound points in there bear!

I've often said that it's pretty silly that society cherishes the lush green lawns surrounding their houses.

What a waste of time, money, water, fertilizer, fuel and creates pollutants.

It does prevent erosion and of course looks nice.

For 20 years, I had a massive garden(at this house, I turned the entire backyard into a vegetable garden). But its too much work for most people. 10 times that of a lawn to do it right. I didn't see it as saving money but spending more actually. For me, the bonus's were from:

1. Nothing tastes better than fresh vegetables. The ones in the store tasted like plastic compared to those from my garden.

2. Growing  5+ times more than what we could eat and putting it in bags to give to my wifes family, special delivery.

3. The enjoyment and rewards of tuning into the plant world and being outdoors.

This is despite a surge in fertilizer imports, causing the re-exports of some. Port storage is full, and much of the supply has not moved internally. Fertilizer deliveries could still be lower this year than last as farmers delayed/skipped purchasing.

reuters.comBrazil unusually re-exports fertilizer amid storage shortage - port authorityBrazil, which normally relies on fertilizer imports to boost crop yields, is re-exporting cargoes as there is nowhere to store them following a surge in inbound shipments earlier this year, according...

What most people don't realize is that the vast majority of manure is already applied to crops. There is no more to gain in the nitrogen fertilizer total from manure, to replace man made fertilizers
