U.S. #corn planting progress is ahead of the recent average, but it is somewhat middle-of-the-pack compared with most recent years. It is still early, though April is set for a cool finish across the whole Corn Belt, not usually conducive to quick, widespread planting.
Last week was pretty chilly across the Corn Belt, but some of the southern states were able to take advantage on #corn planting. Huge jump in progress in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina. Most are much faster than average. Even Illinois went +8% on the week.
#Soybeans were also mostly a southern story, though top producer Illinois is 15% planted versus 6% average.

First nice rain in a very long time for the S.Plains. Much more needed, more on the way.

All the weather:
Fast forward to 2023: Last 10 days have been notably cooler than average across the Corn Belt (though "cooler" for some southern areas still means an OK temp to plant). Looks like it stays cool for next 10ish days but potentially a warmup after that?
North Dakota on the other hand was never really warm during that period in 2022 and it was excessively wet, leading to a record slow spring planting pace. That plus NW Minnesota and parts of S Dakota weighed down the U.S. planting average a bit.
·U.S. #corn planting study: temperature anomalies last two weeks of April/first week of May 2022, then the next three weeks of May 2022. Last year, corn planting was on an unsettling pace through the first week of May, but warm weather allowed normal progression from there.
